CAL 39 Owners Groups

Merry Christmas to all out there!

I’m dealing with an issue with my recently acquired 1980 CAL 39 and am hoping someone on this forum can render assistance. First off are there any CAL 39 forums that are actually active? I have been searching for weeks and can’t seem to find any with current activity I.e. all posts seem really old. Secondly, I’m trying to get in touch with CAL 39 owners to see if I can engage in some info sharing. At the top of my list of things that I need to know is, what are the engine and transmission mount specs for my particular boat? I need to replace the left transmission mount pretty urgently. The diesel mechanic tells me that the boat manufacturer would be the source for that information, however, CAL BOATS is no longer in business as far as I know. I’m therefore hoping to find a current owner that may have this info.

Thanks all in advance for your assistance.

Re: CAL 39 Owners Groups

We owned a Cal 2-27 for fourteen years. Cals are great boats! There was a Cal_Boats group on Yahoo, but I think it ended up moving. BTW, Robert Redford was aboard a Cal 39 in his movie "All is Lost".

What information are you looking for?

Right now, I’m interested in identifying the correct transmission mounts for my 39. Need to replace the left side mount. Think I did see something about the Cal being the boat in all is lost.

Thanks!

You did not indicate what engine you have.
According to Sailboat Data, the stock engine was a Perkins 4-108.
Some 4-108s used 4 mounts on the engines, and some used 2 engine mounts and 2 on the trans.
If you have the 108, suggest you contact:

Do you have a smooth velvet transmission? If so there is no mount to speak of. There are four mounts on the main engine. What year is your CAL39? 1978 to 1982 are the MK-II and III depending on layout. Mine was a 1979 MKII shallow draft normal last. shallow meant 5’6”

Bowdrie, indeed you are right I foolishly omitted that I have a Perkins 4108. This one has the 2 engine and 2 transmission mounts. Thanks for the link and have a great holiday!

My 39 is a 1980 model year. I just purchased it 2 months ago and am getting to know her on the hard. I’ve measured my draft (from waterline) at 5’ 11 1/2”. I’ve attached a photo of the transmission mount that I need to replace. As you can see the mount and especially the transmission bracket that mount attaches to are badly rusted . The other mount, btw, looks great.

Memmerich,

Just purchased her within the past two months. Haven’t sailed her since she was located in Titusville on the Indian River ( not much maneuvering room for tacking) and furthermore she needed all new running rigging which she has now courtesy of “Above Deck Rigging”. Great to work with if you’re in the Canaveral area. At this point I can share from what I believe you may be interested in that she has a massive rudder and fin keel and turns on a dime. Cockpit is a little cramped for groups, however the salon is absolutely spacious! The previous owner, a retired engineer, built custom drawers in the salon side storage behind the two setees (one L shaped, the other straight). Storage is more than I need. The v berth is certainly adequate for two and long enough for my 6’1”. I have yet to clear out the quarter berth which is on the starboard side so can’t comment except to say it holds a great deal of junk. The head is decent but shower is integral and not separated. Headroom throughout would be adequate for 6’4” I think. I plan on sharing more as I get to know her more.

Re: CAL 39 Owners Groups

I had found this Facebook group when I was considering a Cal 39 MkIII.

Had the broker not been so useless and negative, I probably would have purchased it.
