Re: Bestevaer 49ST

The galley has just been fitted .

Three of the countertops will be stainless steel with a lip with a square profile making the top spill proof. The forth will be timber to break up the expanse.
A SS handrail will run the full length of the port side and around the rear curve. The twin square sinks will end up fairly close to the centre line.
The gap for the oven is lined on 4 sides with SS.
Storage space is split between drawers and cupboards.

Floors are only the ply base:

One thing I like in a galley, is the cutlery drawer on the outside toward the galley entry so do not have to go in all the way,, also good if someone else is setting the table..

The drawer used for cutlery will be top rear one on the central bench, so it will be easy to access without bothering the galley slave

Because I will be working 99% of the time at the forward end of the "U", it was important that I could reach the drawer without needing to move out of the safety of the snug space.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

These are a few of the galley's seven piece solid timber drawer fronts and cupboard doors. Whenever a drawer is opened the joints will be visible. I loved this on Bestevaer 49 Zwarte Raaf that we saw under construction three years ago (by the way, this yacht has just been put on the market).

Quite dramatic grain variations in the Bubinga make each door unique. These still need a final sand and oil:

So flat front drawer and cabinet doors? Not the typical Shaker recessed door style in most Bestevaers?

Do you have photos of the wiring, insulation and plumbing before the ceilings/ overhead went up? I'd love to see that part of this beautiful boat.

Although I hope we will end up with a classic look, our interior is more streamlined compared to the very traditional Bestevaers and the simpler cupboard doors will suit it better I think. Also, they will collect less dust .
No groove was an option (as with our 3 big doors), but I think that would have made our interior a little "sterile".

I will dig up some photos for you.

We are enjoying the videos of your aluminium yacht refit. A labour of love!
If anyone hasn't seen them, check out the link in Matt's signature.

I know I posted in the beginning that we were using the Bestevaer as our inspiration in the rebuild. I'm sure you see what I meant now.

Also, I 100% agree about the dust issue. We hope that once we stop living in a construction site, the dust dies down a bit.

Ugh! The photo keeps 180 on me...

A couple of photos of wiring and plumbing before 75mm (3") of foam insulation was sprayed:

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Awesome way to do the overhead. Any idea what they used to bond the wood to the aluminum?

It's amazing how rare it is to see the behind the scenes build of a metal boat from the pros. So much is completely different from what I expect to see. It looks awesome!

Thanks,

Matt

I think they used Innotec adhesive.

The plywood is beautiful quality okoume and after cutting this has all been entirely coated with an epoxy finish. I am not sure if this was to waterproof the end grain of the ply or to help adhesion or both.

Oh, it's plywood. I figured a hardwood. Are the overheads velcroed into place (the blackish strip in the photos) or screwed? I figured the blackish tape was a anti squeak foam tape.

The overheads will be screwed. The black strips were simply protection applied before the foam was sprayed. The were then peeled off.

SWL and Noelex, your Bestever construction photos continue to show beautiful functional sculptural art. Very well thought out and meticulously crafted. Thanks again for letting us admire your creation.
