Re: 40’ ketch, impossible to find?

I bought an Oyster 39 last year that fits your bill. While there were three on the market last year I don't see any currently. Might be worth a look all the same...

Wrong plan! The masts are interconnected by way of a trimester that serves as the fore stay for the mizzen and the back stay for the main mast. You lose one, you lose them both. You'd have to have a colossal foul up to lose a mast - with odds of being hit by lightening probably greater. The reason demastings make the news is because they rarely happen. Save yourself some headaches and forget the ketch. You'll find a much wider inventory of sloops and cutters that will suit your needs.

Re: 40’ ketch, impossible to find?

we have owned a cheoy lee offshore 41 ketch with out a bowsprit and a mariner 31 ketch with a bowsprit. we liked the smaller sail plan and the different sail options. The easier sail plan is a sloop. If you are new to sailing the sloop might be easier to learn on.

Re: 40’ ketch, impossible to find?

There are still lots of good reasons to have a ketch, the wind and the sea haven't changed much though sailors may have.

There are pros and cons to each rig type. Much depends on how you use the boat, how you want to interact with the rig, what your local conditions are, and the temperament of the sailor.

The sea hasn't changed but boats and sail handling sure have. The added complexity of the ketch isn't ideal for the novice. The insurance issues are probably related to experience and eventually to the age of the boat likely if you go with a ketch.

Re: 40’ ketch, impossible to find?

Thank you all for your input and ideas. You’ve given me allot to think about and I realize I have allot to learn and will use this forum to help me do it. The argument regarding the ketch requirement is really helpful, I’ve fallen in love with the Benny, the layout and build,, but the fact that it’s a sloop has kept me from considering them!

Re: 40’ ketch, impossible to find?

I looked hard for a ketch, then came to my senses, twice as much rigging and sails to maintain.

But I did like the Amel Sharki 39’, Amel Maramu 47’, and the Pearson 422 or 424.

My first love was a Jeanneau Gin Fizz.

They no longer insure in the U.S.
Seems to be the case with allot of the companies. I wonder what the problem is?

My husband just showed me an ad for a 1976 Fales Navigator 38t. He seems to like the boat enough to put an offer on it and drive 13 hrs to see it. Seems like allot of boat to me.... any thoughts?

A nice motor sailor. Won't break any speed records but who cares.

Re: 40’ ketch, impossible to find?

Two engines and likely a genset plus three sails minimum. All of the fun of sailboat plus the Upkeep of a powerboat. Smart looking craft very trawleresque looking.

Remember, try not to fall in love with the first boat you see.
