200 Mile-Per-Day Bluewater Boats

What Bluewater Cruisers would fit in the 200mpd category? Ketch would be nice, Cutter a second choice. Looking for something built for serious offshore work, but not a slug on the water, hence my question!

PS. Monohulls only

Your Thoughts?

Thanks,

David

IMHO, there are NO CRUISERS that should be expected to average 200nm/day.

do the math... hull speed is 1.34 x sq rt of LWL

200 / 24 = 8.3 nm/hr

8.3 = 1.34 x swq rt of LWL

sq rt LWL = 8.3/1.34 = 6.2

LWL = 6.2 x 6.2 = 38.7'

Figure another 10 ft for overhangs and you need min 45 LOA boat... going hull speed 24/7.

If you can only make ull speed 75% of the time.. you need to increase the LWL by 33% or so and now you are at 52' LWL + 12 ft for overhangs...

Go for a 60' yacht

It all depends on your budget. a question, why are you focused on the 200 miles per day? very few vessels will average that cruising.There are lots that can do 200 MPD given the right conditions. An 8.3 knot Average means that hull speed will need to be in the 10knot range.
which puts you into vessels somewhere in the 58 to 65 foot range

You're right Gord. I should have done a little research first before asking!
I'll re-look at the Dashew's site as well Christian!

This article pretty well summed it up for me and is very well written: http://www.bethandevans.com/pdf/200mile.pdf

Found it right after I posted.

I guess I just need to realize that if I am going to "cruise" I need to relax and enjoy the ride!

Forget I even asked! I retract my question! I'm gonna go have an adult beverage and reeeellllaaaxxxx!

Thanks for yout thoughts!

There are lots of cruising boats that can do 200 mile days, we have on the real key is waterline length. At 40' LWL we can 200+ days if all is perfect. The reality is to avg a 200 mile day you need 50' LWL minimum. So there's your answer, BIG BOATS.

I've averaged 200+ miles per day over 7 days BUT that is rare even with a 49 ft waterline. To do 200 miles you must average over 8 kts; that is hard to do under power. Current gets in your way as well.

Since David has gotten his answer maybe we can shift the discussion a bit (if it ok?) to tell about the times we broke 200 mile days.

No cheating monos only we don't need the multi guys rubbing it in they are allowed to sit back and smugly/smirk at our posts though.

The only true two hunded mile days, though I've come close a lot, was on a Little Harbor 52 she had a 80 footish mast height from the water line. Black Tie 1992 Little Harbor 52’ (sister ship) It was on a down hill run from St.Thomas to Eluthera Bahamas. We had to hand steer due to problems with the autopilot (NO ONE WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT THAT!). My favorite memories was the night watches, hearing the breaking seas behind me and above, feeling the lift of the stern, counter steering, and then screaming down the wave, bottom of the wave the rudder goes slack, get ready for th next wave. Laughing all the way! The best day was 224 miles in 24 hours. sweet

Me at the helm

I never came close to 200mpd on my mono, but then again she was a 30ft Columbia. I did get 143 mpd single-handing in Mexico. 2 reefs in the main, and a full 130 headsail with the wind on the quarter. I knew I was pushing her, but I couldnt bring myself to reduce the headsail......i2f
