I'm headed to the Philippines in a few months. Discussion so far has been about how the powers that be are flexing their muscles and mouths at each other.

I'm more concerned with how the Philippine people will treat a visiting American. Any one have any info?

You have that right. I am so sick of politics I could puke in my shoes. I'll be glad when the election is over.

I was in PI from January to June 2016. I was well treated by 99% of the Filipinos I met. I made many friends while there and enjoyed their company.

I suspect MOST Filipinos have a favorable feeling about Americans, as many have relatives in the USA and many have traveled to the USA. Many respect and admire the American military, businesses, and culture.

Agree, the filipinos are truly a wonderful culture, fun and full of life. I have very fond memories of my brief stay years ago. To truly appriciate these wonderful, people one had to get away from Subic, Bay.

Our way, which was once much better than it is, is not the way everywhere. That is one of the reasons I like to get away. The voyages generally improve both my understanding and acceptance of the way things are here in the USA and the way they are heading. It is not to my liking, but at least I can still have a way to get away. Apologies if this is way over the top, but thought I weigh in before the hammer dropped.

Ironically more that one million Philippine civilians died at the hands of the Japanese during WWII. My father, an officer in the 38th Inf. Div., help secure the Bataan Peninsula in 1945. The election of this loose-cannon president only show the frustration of the people with their system.

The problem with these nut case leaders can be that they encourage and empower officials who sympathise with their political views as expressed in the leaders rants. I used to travel to Indonesia a lot and the only times I had problems with their immigration officials was when there was a spat on between our governments. The lay people and business associates I met or had there were never a problem.

Unfortunately this is the inevitable result of the US habit of placing repressive puppet rulers, or destabilising, in any country that does not allow US business to rob them blind

no one brought up politics.
state pf planet is not politics but wise cruising.
you would not want to go somewhere without knowing into what you are sailing, now would you?
no one is pushing a candidate--we discussing what the world is doing who is doing what and how to survive as cruisers.

The "State of the Planet" is very well known to all of us. The points made in this thread have nothing whatsoever to do with cruising. "The media" of your choice are keeping us entirely abreast of what is going on in the world.

And your assessment of the state of the media has what to do with cruising? Sounds like an extension of your political views

Re: Philippines President Duterte Tells Foreign Business They Can Leave

those of us out here cruising donot always receive mainstream media , usa, thankyou so much. we learn from passing of info between cruisers and what is gleanable from whatever source available.
it takes a special kind of hard head to not accept the convolutions involved in the fine art of discussion. seems to me the earned title of someone who interrupts the flow of a thread is troll.
\have a grande day may we continue the discussion yet?

Okay, kids, does anyone like vanilla ice cream? Last time Duterte conversation came about it got heated and shut down very quickly by the moderators.

On another note, I finished mowing and raking the lawn just 3o minutes ago..and now a honest rain begins. Time for a nap with the window open...smile
