Cost of Langkawi Registration Annual Fees

I just got a quote from Agent to renew my Langkawi Certificate of Registration and MMSI

It was almost doulble what I paid the year before.

It could be just the Agent

Can anyone tell me if they have experienced the same and if not who they use?
thanks... This annoys me!

Re: Cost of Langkawi Registration Annual Fees

The Langkawi cert annual costs are approx $250/yr and our agent charges $200 for the handling fee (45ft cat). To distribute the handling cost we get 3 years registration in advance.

Hi Emerald,

I was quoted
..Langkawi Certificate usd650
..MMSI License usd430
(Which includes Agents Fee).

I was told I can only apply for one year at a time

Would you mind sharing who your Agent is?..
Thanks

Re: Cost of Langkawi Registration Annual Fees

Interesting, I was quoted:

1 year MYR (w/ tonnage fee): about 590US.

5 year LIYR (w/ MMSI): about 1180US (was also told for the MMSI, you need the multi year LIYR)

Hi Emerald,

It appears that these costs seem to be a bit "elastic", so a contact for your agent would be helpful for us as well. We are considering Langkawi for a new boat registration. Many thanks👍

Re: Cost of Langkawi Registration Annual Fees

A registration in Jersey seems to be cheaper and the procedure seems simpler to me on the long term. True, it's limited to Commonwealth/EU subjects.

Simpson Marine (Singapore) Phone: (65) 6274 3359, ONE°15 Marina Club #02-03, 11 Cove Drive, Sentosa Cove, Singapore 098497.
Note that we purchased our L450 via Simpson and it was part of their service, which Ive continued to, use for renewals. Not sure they do this for outsiders.

Re: Cost of Langkawi Registration Annual Fees

Thanks Emerald, Just returned last night from a week in Singapore, so a shame I could not have spoken to them directly, but I will call tomorrow and advise if they offer that service to all

The agent I use, worked for Simpson Marine before doing this and then went out on their own...Seems they think I am committed to them.

Has anyone out there, done the annual registration with a local in Langkawi?

I did not need a pre-survey for Langkawi and I know boats based there can do the annuals themselves

We plan to be in that area next year.

My problem with required agents is that thier Fees and requirement costs just keep going up and up as I discovered with St Vincent and the Grenadines (my previous registry)

Re: Cost of Langkawi Registration Annual Fees

The survey is just a one-off tonnage measurement. As for representative, I don't know if a simple mail forwarding service could do the job. Same question for Guernsey & IOM, it's better to leave ever changing "boating-priced" middlemen out of the game.

Belgium thruogh an EU (any countries) company ownership is also a possibility.

Re: Cost of Langkawi Registration Annual Fees

For SV&Grenadines, first it was we had to use their agent, and each year price went up, then we were required to form a company and costs doubled.

Not practical for a small yacht

Re: Cost of Langkawi Registration Annual Fees

Are there any other requirements to registering in Langkawi other than the admin formalities ie. Does your yacht physically need to port in Malaysia? Other requirements?

Boat or owner does Not need to be in Malaysia as paperwork is done by an Agent

We registered a 16 m catamaran in Jersey last year and it was by far the easiest and least expensive option that we could find, including Langkawi and all the other usual offshore registries. The owner is Canadian, so qualified that way. The survey was a basic length, width, height volume calculation for registered tonnage which a local Lloyd’s-affiliated surveyor did for us for 200NZD plus 175GBP for the UK Marine Surveyors Association certificate. We paid 125GBP for provisional registration and full registration for 10 years was 440GBP. The renewal is currently 100GBP. Our registered agent charged us 125GBP for the life of the registration and as far as I know don’t do anything except forward any communications from the registry to us. The ship’s radio licence for MMSI and call sign with OFCOM is free.

All up, it cost us 1,000GBP for 10 years of registration. After that, 100GBP for another 10 years. The process is well explained and is easy to do yourself, no agent required.

Re: Cost of Langkawi Registration Annual Fees

That's the point, my quick&dirty cost estimate also gave~100£/year total costs for the first decade. AFAIK the same situation for commonwealth citizens @Guernsey and IOM. I definitely wouldn't want the hassle with an agent every 1-3years...

With channel islands reg vat-free repairs and parts are also a potential plus (compared to EU regs - of course the Langkawi reg also does that).
