Windvane advice.

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I have a new(ish) to me SouthernCross 28 and I'm looking for advice on and appropriate windvane for a canoe sterned wheel steered boat.
Ive sailed a reasonable amount of boats with wind steering but all with tillers and scoop, or reverse transoms.

Re: Windvane advice.

If you have sailed with multiple boats with windvane steering, what did you like? The major players should work on canoe sterns and wheels as well as tillers.

The biggest question is probably if you want a pendulum type or aux rudder type. Each has advantages, and owners of each will argue the merits of what they have.

Re: Windvane advice.

I’ve been very happy with my Monitor windvane. Five singlehanded trips to Bermuda with no issues whatsoever.

If you Contact Scanmar they will send you an installation diagram for your boat.

We love our monitor on our canoe stern boat but lots of quality choices out there.

I like the simplicity of the aux rudder type. But wonder if it would justcollect a bunch of seaweed in my area... Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic side of Florida.

The Aux rudder won't pick up any more weed than the oar of a servo vane, and will be less affected by any weed's presence than the oar would be.

Re: Windvane advice.

as Peter from Windpilot rightly pointed out to us, when the question "Aux-rudder or servo-paddle" arose:
the mounting area of the aux-rudder has to be beefed up much more than for a servo-paddle gear, as it has to cope with the whole force for steering the boat, whereas the forces on the mount of the servopaddle gear only have to cope with the forces that are applied to the wheel/tiller. The WP Pacific (servopaddle gear) btw dismounts very easily (2 bolts) & only leaves a quite small mount. Very handy for say a Panama Canal transit or other situations dangerous for all stern mounted apparati.
PS: I have NO commercial interest in promoting Windpilot gears, I am just a very satisfied customer
