They've written entire books, in fact many books, about the questions that you are asking. Suggest you look through the archives of this and other sites for discussions of the various building materials and types of boats. Answering your questions would be a collosal waste of our energies and time, especially since there are no real definitive answers. The best boat?? The one that floats where you want to go. The best material is what that boat is made out of.

Do your homework and then come back with some specific questions that we can answer.

Usually when people answer a question with a question, it's because there is no answer to your question, or because it seems to them that you need to embark on a long discovery process in order to answer the question for yourself, or at the very least that no-one else can answer it for you.

In this case, I think the issues of religions (including gun ownership) are being raised as a wry nod to the nature of the unanswerable.

Re: whats the safest kind of hull?

Just so you don't feel like you left with no additional info. There are lots of emotional arguments mono vs multi hull. If you look at the objective information available, you will not find facts that show that either one is safer than the other. The data does tend to show that longer water lines are safer. This doesn't typically make a lot of difference for potential cruisers because if you have the finances and desire to buy a 32 foot boat (say a Westsail 32), you probably don't have the finances to buy a 60 foot boat (say a Sundeer 64)

Re: whats the safest kind of hull?

From the other thread where you asked about materials, you explained your cruising grounds, likely on-board population, and parking method: British isles and Mediterranean, 2 + 3ish, anchoring out.

Based on the likely conditions, I'd suggest a monohull, but the anchoring out at least gives you the option of the multi....especially in the crowded Med. Like the others said, it's up to you to research and and find out what suits you, as there is no single answer we can honestly impose on you. Time to go data-mining....

Re: whats the safest kind of hull?

Forgive the sarcasm but if you would do just a little, tiny bit of research here, any sailing books, any sailing magazine or ask any experienced sailor you meet about the subject you will find, as mentioned, that there is not one single correct answer to that question.

This is like asking what is the best car, who is the most beautiful woman in the world, what is the best food to eat, what is the best wine, who is the best football player in UK history. The answer to all these questions is arguable and at the end of the day, many different opinions as to the right answer.

Re: whats the safest kind of hull?

All kinds of boats you mentioned sailed safely far and wide.

There are many angles to look at safety and each of the types can be labeled 'safest' if viewed from at least one of them.

Re: whats the safest kind of hull?

what is the best car - ROLLS, pre-war

who is the most beautiful woman in the world - depends on which man you ask

what is the best food to eat - anything that doesn't kill you

what is the best wine - see John 2:10

who is the best football player in UK history - competition not over yet, hence unanswerable at this time

Hi ALIZE

This to me seems to be a perfectly reasonable question for a newbie and I'm disappointed that you have not received an answer that would steer you in the right direction. Of course we were all newbies at some stage.

It is true that your question is somewhat unanswerable, at least in a polite manner by many members of CF. This is becuase the issues you raised are totally subjective and there are many opposite opinions which are equally as valid.

My experience is that the main determining factor of which boat to buy is how much money do you have to spend? If you can narrow this down to an amount, then I would suggest looking at websites and visiting brokers to look at many types of boats within your price range. You will quickly develop a taste for a certain type of vessel. Once you've decided that, if you keep looking at boats, you will eventually fall in love with a particular boat and then the rest doesn't matter.

Re: whats the safest kind of hull?

The answer to this question is easy. The safest boat is the one with the most experienced and prudent sailor. Worry about getting yourself skill, then you will be able to answer the question yourself.
