Re: Webb Chiles' 6th Circumnavigation Launching Today

He just crossed the equator, and looks on a one tack 3000 mile deep reach to the north Island! None of this namby pamby dwaddling around Polynesia by Gawd. Sausage rolls and Haere Mai in the offing for Gannet! Wish I was even one part the sailor that is aboard Gannet and it's mighty run across the Pacific. Well done so far, Web Chilies. Go for Gold Captain!!

I thought he was heading for Samoa? Then on to the North Island.

from his Bumf entry.

I also sent an email to a Samoan government agency advising them of my projected arrival about July 21.

Yes, I think you are right! Soon as I saw your quote, I remembered reading Web's blog about emailing for a visa or entry info etc... Also When I zoomed into the yellowbrick chart of the world it does appear Gannet is headed right towards Samoa. Funny I never realized hawaii - Samoa- NZ seem to be on a rhumb line.

Nevertheless, a grand voyage if there ever was one.

Re: Webb Chiles' 6th Circumnavigation Launching Today

The toughest part could be south of Fiji to NZ. There is a massive underwater ridge that runs from Fiji to NZ and I believe, although I have no empirical evidence, that the ridge is the cause of some very large seas in that area. I have read a number of accounts of horrific passages from Fiji to NZ.

Edit: oh lord, I meant Tonga, not Fiji

Ha, got pasted on the kermadec rise once. I think its the way it brings the strong subsea currents up to the surface that cause the problems. Saying that I never had any problems on other trips. Great to see Webb is doing so well. Hats off to him.

Just some info regarding the above for any interested parties. I checked out Webb's passage on my laptop and can indeed see all the previous blue dots on the yellow trackline but these are not visible when viewing the same link on the iPad so this confirms that I am not seeing the full picture relative to his track on my iPad.

he is a good writer but i am pretty sure i would not attempt what he is doing in a 24 foot boat .. seems like a bit too much of a challenge for my taste

I hear ya. I am the same age as he is but I don't think I fold quite as easily. The man seems to be able to endure.

Webb is making steady progress. I will be interested to see where his next port of call will be. No doubt he will run into some adverse weather on his run south to NZ. Wishing him a safe passage.

He is heading straight to Tonga. I don't know if he was going to land at Neiufu or not but we should know in the next day or so.

I just took another look at the Yellowbrick tracking and he is almost at Tonga's north Island.
