On the bucket. I got into block island and thought I needed a bucket. At the time it was essential. The chandeliers wanted 20 bucks. So I wandered around restaurant teas cans tell I found the essential bucket. I still have that pale. I have used it for many things. I can't remember why I wanted a bucket at the time. I wanted a bucket and maybe when I found the price tag it became essential that I find x bucket without paying for it. I really like this bucket. No idea what the handle is made of it should be a rusted waste by now but it still looks like it did the day I found it. Pickled ithink.

btw, there is a newish "kitchen" extinguisher marketed by Kidde. they say it is about the same as the conventional liter-sized home extinguishers, but it is designed to shoot a wider cloud, with lower force, especially so it won't blast an oily skillet fire all over the stove. And it uses bicarbonate instead of the yellow powder, so it won't corrode everything it touches.

Marketed rather poorly, the box makes none of that obvious. But a fine idea for the galley.

I've got one (OE ) - the only problem is that I have an old style Aft Cabin and that's where the rudder stock is located.....so when the emergency tiller is fitted and used the helmsman can't see where he is going! Obviously OK with more than 1 onboard, otherwise will be sailing blind (by compass / GPS) ......unless a camera is installed?

My plan is that if it ever becomes an issue is to "worry about it then" .....the odds are strong that I will have plenty of time to ponder things.........

I just bought this! For me in troublesome climate as you find in this hemisphere quite necessary. Will come for my UK tour very handy.

GPS offshore only: I'd rather have it while coastal sailing in unfamiliar waters than mid ocean.

Is it essential? No, not at all. But during the days that one did without electronic navigation, the chances of wrecking the oiat on rocks or reefs was substantially higher. Ships went down all the time. So doing away with GPS increases risk. Just like doing away with the engine, using wood stoves etc.

Can you get digital files from this unit into a computer based charting program or is it just hard copy printout ???

I have to find out what the options are. I know there is a Navtex receiving unit available (optional) and there are all sorts of connections, also a usb - I really have to find out because this is a professional piece, not that small amateur stuff. This thing is under normal condition in the 6-7000 US$ range. I have procured an ICOM R-72 receiver which I can connect with the Furuno.
This is a whole new toy for me although I was always anxious to have one. Having an actual print rather than a gribfile is to me a very valuable asset.
Somewhere I will find the optional Navtex receiver or maybe another brand can be connected.

it work's in exactly the same way as jvcomm32 would on your labtop,ie as a micro-processor,modem and a printer.

wheter you can get the digital recording of an analogue signal to talk to your laptop is another story................

these units dont recive gribfiles,only weather fax from land based radio ssb signals.

I would like to add silicone cookware like baking dishes etc and battery operated push button led lights for pantry cupboards and other hidy holes.
