Seventy Boats Destroyed or Badly Damaged

Well we are up to 70 boats written of or at least badly damaged here in Airlie beach Australia and that came from the insurance assors mouth as he looked over my boat this morning. i am one of the lucky ones with just superficial damage amounting to around 20 grand. for those who have not seen here is the link wich is also on another post on the forum.

this is just the boats on the rocks there are many more still on there moorings but on the ocean floor.

Wow. That ain't nice. So how strong was this storm?

it was not so much the winds that did the damage to the boats but the large seas. it is a shallow bay and with waves coming in around 3 metres the moorings did not really have enough scope to handle it.
Aparantly it is the biggest maritme sinking of vessels in Australia ever. here there is just wreckage everywhere. In the morning we are of to try to refloat one of the luckier ones which landed on the beach. I must say that the insurance companies seem to be doing a good job in helping be as speedy with claims etc as they can. but it is still a sad sight to walk around here at the moment.

Very sad sight… we had a similar thing happen in December 06 in the Philippines where the scope on the moorings was all to short because of the density of boats.

A Typhoon passed over the top of us and 7 of the 15 boats ended up on the beach because of broken lines to the mooring buoys. We were one of the lucky ones but never again will I moor in a crowd when serious weather is coming.

I am looking for parts for a Bukh 20 - If anyone knows of one being wreaked on insurance or going for a cheap price could you please contact me. I need the engine plates, so water damage is no problem. Will be up that way soon.

Oh – I am more than happy to salvage the thing from the bottom.
