Scrapping the boat

I am looking at scrapping my boat 35ft sail and am looking for info on doing it. Can I scrap the lead and aluminum, there is also a 3gm30 1500hrs since rebuild and trans with less than 200 hrs. lots of stainless fittings for canvas etc. Would a yard do any of that or would I just give it to them and walk away.

Right now lead is worth 85 cents a pound wholesale and aluminum 75 cents. Scrap prices are lower


The cost of demolition and disposal of the fiberglass usually exceeds the value of the scrap

Some county landfills in FL will take a hull for free as they've learned it's much cheaper than going out and paying a salvage company later.

I commend you for being responsible and just haul the hull to the county landfills on a flatbed. Some counties probably less than others. No doubt the workers enjoy tearing them up with the bulldozers!

Thanks for the input. I'm going to call that guy in NC. She is in the Chesapeake and would not be a problem to take her down. She is 35ft so we got to put the chain saw to her. Just hate to scrap all the equipment.

Thanks again everybody. I'm going to start stripping her down and hopefully sell some of the stuff. Didn't realize how much there is until I started thinking about it. Swim ladder blocks shackles stainless rail and bimini fittings. all these years I wondered where the money went.

IIRC, there's a consignment chandlery in Cambridge. Might try to find them and see what the deal is ?

Bacon Sails in Annapolis is another consignment shop you might look at after you've sold everything you can on your own.

Thanks I'll have to look for that one in Cambridge that's my home port. I just hate seeing all this equipment going to a landfill. Sorry Bacon is out.

We are in Oasis marina in Cambridge right now. I wasn't aware of there being a consignment shop here but we just rolled into town a couple of days ago and snagged a slip yesterday.

There seem to be a number of folk here. Perhaps a garage sale micht be a way to get some interest in some of the more valuable items if you had a place to do it nearby the marinas.

I scrapped out a Cherubini Hunter 27 several years ago (extensive core rot) wasn't too much of a problem. The keel was about 3300 lbs of lead and got about $1500. Sold the 10 HP Yannar for $500. Couldn't find a buyer for the mast so cut it up got about $60 for the aluminum. Got a few hundred more for some of the other bits and some sails, and still have a garage full of 'stuff'. Cost to get rid of the hull was based on weight and was about $70 - I was able to use my yacht club travel lift ($50) to drop the keel and load the hull on a borrowed flatbed trailer, behind a pick-up.

Note that scrap prices are very low right now.
