Re: Sailboat names

Years ago when my wife and I sold our first (and only) liveaboard, a Catalina 27, the old guy who bought it renamed her "damifiknow."

A couple of years after that he sold her and bought a big houseboat that he named - yep - damifiknow II

Bless his heart

Re: Sailboat names

I've always gotten a laugh from the old Sailing Anarchy thread concerning the boat name "FUJIMO"....

Re: Sailboat names

Once met a divorced guy whose sailboat was called "Susan's Floor". Apparently, Susan had wanted a new floor in their home. He had moved out by then.

Yeah I’ve seen a couple crude boat names in my neck of the woods.

A Cigarette style boat called: Offshoregasm

A sailboat called: Blow Ho

Hard to take serious an owner that names their boat with a silly name.

I had a lot of fun doing the name for my fishing boat. There are many online script companies that do the name in any kind of script, color, shades, etc and also graphic stores.....there is no limit, and it's not that expensive.

You can mess around with their online name template and " create" your own design.

You'll get the name on backing paper, it's a vinyl stick-on, which is simple to apply to your boat, either on the transom or along the sides.

Or.....you can go to Hobby Lobby or someplace like that, they sell rolls of stick-on vinyl in countless shades, pick out a color you like and do your own graphics. Don't limit yourself to just the name, you can design, or have designed, a graphic of your dog, woven into the name or anything you want. One color, two colors, etc.

There is no limit to how you can have this name done.

I doodled around on a piece of paper, several outlines of the same name. I also went online and googled name designs. There is simply no limit to what you can do.

Don't settle for just plain script. Get creative. There is no limit to what you can do. There are also people that specialize in painting names on boats. A bit more expensive off course, but another option.

Because my boat name was going on a fishing boat, I had the profile of a fish woven into the name. It came out really good. I did the fish graphics myself, but the name was done by an online company. The two names and fish graphic cost me about $60 or thereabouts.
This is all so very artsy and self indulgent, but it contravenes CG rules for documented vessels (and similar codes in other countries than the USA). These rules require that names be in block letters in a color contrasting to their backgrounds.

We see all too many vessels with their names so embellished with "art" that one can not read them. No problem... until there IS a problem and the inability of observers to identify the vessel interrupts the rescue or whatever emergency is unfolding.

And my favorite clever name, seen on a VERY rough metal boat somewhere in the South Pacific, was "Rumpledsteelskin". Doesn't pass the Coast Guard test, but it made me smile and I still remember it many years later.

Who had probably un-British-ised his name.

I do believe that the CG rules require that the vessel name be in specific sized/color differentiated block letters and located in one of several places.

I don't recall there being a prohibition on placing additional graphics elsewhere in whatever artistic style the owner chooses. Am I mistaken?

Are you planning to buy Mads' Albin Ballad? Looks like a good boat!

Jump to 15:01 for the boat. I think "Obelix" is a great name to keep.

There are no restrictions on artwork on the hull as long as the name and hailing port remain legible and conforming with the rule.

And there is plenty of acreage elsewhere, so this ain't a severe restriction.
