Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

I added a trick switch inside the outboard engine housing...you can't see this as it is located under the engine....it's wired into the regular kill switch circuitry...but the engine won't start, without this switch in the correct position...

it's a pain in the butt to do all these things....but....peace of mind...

Outboards are more in demand.

although our outboard is quite new, we have a very old battered looking cowling...trying to make it look unattractive to the badies...at least from a distance

cheers,

NO, only a small, roll up dinghy. 8 or 9 ft.

Takes up about the same space as a med. lg. duffel bag, but not a giant one.

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

It was easy for us. We named Margarita's ding Salt. When we show up it's "Here comes Margarita with Salt".

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

Boat naming is serious business. We took far more time deciding on a name than deciding to purchase.

For our dinghy, I still like "One Ringy" as in One Ringy Dingy(Dinghy) with a nod to Lily Tomliin.

If you remember that skit, I'll bet you smiled.

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

Should have some connection to boat’s name.
My sailboat is Fessalo which roughly translate to bum in the water because it was in a cradle when bought and I said you will soon have your bum in the water. Consequently I names my dinghy “II Fessalo” putting the II in front instead of after so it reads 2 cheeks in the water.

Our sailboat’s name is WAHOO. We are from New Orleans; so we named our dinghy “HOO-DAT” a take off from the old New Orleans greeting “Who dat?”

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

You just need to spill a little champagne or other libation on the tender during the ceremony; and pour a dram over the side for Poseidon. Our sailboat is S/V Certainty...and the leaky inflatable is Uncertainty.

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

Our sailboat was named Ma Belle Reine. (My Dad worked for the phone company.)
So the dinghy had to be named One Ringy!

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

Great thread - I love the stories.

I think that dinghys should be named but as noted they should "earn" the name. Or for us rather the name chooses them.

One of out dinks over the years was named "bad watch, bad WATCH, BAD WATCH" (think on Disney's Mad Hatter Tea Party). In this dink the time just slipped away as we explored. We were never on time.

Another dinghy always appeared to get us thinking about small problems - thus "Small Muse".

In any case we never put the name on the dink - Not quite sure why.

Our current dinghy has not been named yet. We are bouncing between "Recovery" and The Chase". This dink was stolen off the dock. A few weeks later there was a photo of it in the local Craig's List for sale. Taking a look at the background in the photo we were able to figure out where the photo was taken. A quick look at the spot showed us that it had moved but there was a lot of homeless (Can you be homeless while living on a boat?) lining on abandoned boats. We put out some feelers.

Next morning we got a call from the Chief Engineer of a local dredge saying that our dink was in the lagoon outside his office window. Long story short, Next thing we know a 23' sailboat with our dink tied to it was running away at a blazing 7 kt. (story where they wrapped the painter around their outboard left out...) Sool a 45 kt patrol boat chased them down and our dink was recovered.

Now that's funny. I just spit my coffee all over the computer screen, but I won't hold it against you.

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

Our big boat came to us as Irrational (kept this great name) the first tiny dinghy was TotaLee . Next dinghy, of proper dimensions, is Little Bit. These are important things to contemplate!

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

Just bought a new (used) VINDO 50 and changed her name to "ONNACALL". The dingy is named "THE OTHER LINE". When someone calls my shop looking for me, my office manager won't be lying when she tells them I'm on "THE OTHER LINE" then going out "ONNACALL".
