But just how fussy is old Poseidon about tenders? Should I plan on slipping him a libation with a bit of pomp, or just rip the vinyl letters off the old inflatable and cast it aside in favour of the nice shiny new aluminum bottomed beauty with a recycled name?

Inquiring minds want to know.

This is a strange question indeed.

Yes, and the fast RIB they also used was called “Kiss Me Quick”.

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

Our first big boat came with the name "Moonshine" and a very small round bottomed dinghy, with no name on it. A good friend suggested we name it and said he had the perfect name, "Eliot". After some thinking we thought it was the perfect name for our dinghy. So for the next 10-years, Eliot chased Moonshine around the Pacific Northwest.
I was fun to watch dock walkers look at the name with the classic puzzled look on their faces.....

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

Our boat is named Tosca. I've always been a little suspicious of naming a boat after an opera in which they all die in the end. So far, so good though. Tosca's dinghy is named Demi-Tosca.

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

We've never affixed a name to a dinghy, but we do have names for them. Our last dinghy was "Super Dinghy'. Our current dinghy is "Dingus Maximus" (which is, in itself, it's own separate joke since it's a pun on 'dinghy' but 'dingus' actually means (an often small article whose common name is unknown or forgotten)

Both are small roll-ups around 8'6". So the names are a bit of a joke like calling a bald guy 'Curly', or a fat guy 'slim'.

Two months late to the party, but we just bought a boat, with the plan to re-name her Abby (as soon as I determine if I can do a de-naming and re-naming thing by myself with the boat on land, or if I have to convince my atheist, very-not-superstitious partner to participate and do it out on the water). We bought, separately, an inflatable and unnamed dinghy that we will name Gail.

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

Our SV is named Stella Maris, which translates loosely as Star of the Sea. We just got a new dinghy and plan to name her Lil’Luna. These names reflect the names of my mother and grandmother, as well as my father’s lobster boat. I love the connection to so many happy memories from my childhood. Our logo is a compass pointing toward the North Star, in deference to the goddess mythology of Stella Maris as the North Star guiding mariners.

From my description of our name, it should be no surprise that we did a very elaborate naming ceremony - with both champagne and whiskey - for Stella Maris! But….the old name was hidden in the opening page of our battery monitor. So, now that I have finally figured out how to change those settings, we will have another ceremony for both Stella Maris and Lil’Luna. And why not? It’s fun. It connects us to maritime traditions. And…it might actually do some good!

Re: Ridiculous question: Naming a dinghy

Changed the boat name (under appropriate ceremony) to “Just Lucky”. My wife then decided the dinghy needed a name so it became “Good Planning”

Our motorsailer is named "Gatsby" and our dinghy is named "Old Sport". Thieves who have read the classics may make the connection.

Dare I guess that you and your vessel are drawn to the odd-number lighted aids to navigation?
