Record breaking rogue wave

Interesting to see some science confirming their existence.

Re: Record breaking rogue wave

If it's rare that they're ever recorded, how do they know it's a "once in a millennium" wave?

Didn't the QEII get hit by a 30-meter rogue wave some years back?

Re: Record breaking rogue wave

They have been confirmed long before now by UK and EU studies

Their existence has also since been confirmed by video and photographs, satellite imagery, radar of the ocean surface,[10] stereo wave imaging systems,[11] pressure transducers on the sea-floor, and oceanographic research vessels.[12] In February 2000, a British oceanographic research vessel, the RRS Discovery, sailing in the Rockall Trough west of Scotland, encountered the largest waves ever recorded by any scientific instruments in the open ocean, with a SWH of 18.5 metres (61 ft) and individual waves up to 29.1 metres (95 ft).[13] "In 2004 scientists using three weeks of radar images from European Space Agency satellites found ten rogue waves, each 25 metres (82 ft) or higher."[14]

Re: Record breaking rogue wave

The BBC had a show on this a few years back that I found on U-toob.

My lasting memory is the description of chairs and other items tumbling downhill as their vessel headed into the trough in front of the wave.

Yikes...

At least it wasn't breaking!

Most of us have probably seen those waves that make you sit up and say "whoa, look at that one!" but this kind is really different. I think I have mentioned this before but once, while flying with my father out over the Santa Barbara Channel, he leaned the plane over and said "look at that!" Below us among the white caps was one big breaking wave, perhaps a quarter mile long, distinctly bigger than the rest. We followed and watched it for a few minutes until it finally petered out. I have no idea how tall it was, or if it qualifies as a genuine rogue, but it left me with the impression that I should not doubt any reports of rogue waves!

on one ocean crossing , I came on a dawn watch , rather still asleep , I looked out to starboard. a mile or two away "hmm thats an awfully big mountain", till my other bit of my brain slapped me about the head and reminded me I was 1500 miles from any land !!!
