Re: Real Blue water Boats

Don't forget the vikings. They sailed open boats across the North Atlantic 1000 years ago.

No positive buoyancy, no leaking hatches, no engines.........
One hull, no keel

Yet here we are forever arguing about what it takes for a modern boat to be blue water. Good thing there was no internet back then.
So when do you plan on showing us that your Hunter can do it?

Re: Real Blue water Boats

I have seen two French guys taking off in a small (maybe 25' or so) cat. No house at all, all life in two narrow hulls!

And they did not have any sextant nor compass either.

They made it all right to the other side too. All by the stars, wind and waves.

Water boats">Blue water boats, blue water people.

Re: Real Blue water Boats

I do wonder about the ones who didn't make it... like they say ..history is written by the victors... or something like that... successful ocean crossings are know about because they are...ahh.. successful!
Slocum.. yep once.. what about the second time? thats 50/50..
Several people have survived falls from the sky without parachutes... so is it safe to jump from a plane without one.....?

So, I get it.. The sense of the thread.. If I am out there alone (mostly) and I start to feel like a wussie I should imagine myself in a much smaller boat drinking rum.:-) certainly appreciate the pix and Food for thought

Years ago I was fascinated to read about the Irish monk Brandon sailing the Atlantic in the 5th century. Tim Severin's re-creation and book describe the event and the amazing skills of sailing from island clouds to island clouds in a leather curragh!

Re: Real Blue water Boats

Yes life was cheaper back in the day.

The first guys figuring out how to hunt mammoths I'm sure had a high failure rate.
We should really still allow Darwin to operate more with our (over) population.

But most prefer to play it safe(r) these days, each life a precious snowflake
