Re: Orcas have destroyed our rudder

Simplest explanation would be orcas are hungry. And not beeing able to bite into the keel or the hull they try their luck on the rudder. No matter what the hull is made of, the rudder I would make of aluminium or steel.

I believe I had read this before here. In the same area. Maybe it's just fun, messing with the dumb humans.

use a different colour antifouling. The Orcas probably think your boat is some kind of whale up for grabs. Grey whales have attacked trimarans, striking the amas, because they think a tri centre hull is a whale being attacked by some other animals. I was once investigated by a huge male humpback that surfaced right under my portside ama. I started the motor--and he was happy then and left.

I was, years ago now, a remote area fishing guide on many Alaskan coastal rivers. Ive encountered hundreds of brown bear and perhaps a 1000 black bear. They destroy fishing gear, lunch boxs, boats, I even saw a large male brown bear rip the door from a piper supercub and trash the interior. Never once have I or the people I worked with felt it necessary to kill one over equipment and gear. If human life is in eminent danger of attack, yes, only then.
I hope this is a poor joke!
Clearly your sarcasm detector is broken. LOL

I agree with your post and ethic.

It is their ocean, their home, we are their guests.

I was recommending that folks who can not abide should stay away.

Re: Orcas have destroyed our rudder

There's a yt? Video of a young couple sailing their 28footer across the bay of biscay , they were adrift in the fog ,with their prop being fouled and the orcas started to bump their boat ,so they called the coast guard for a tow

Later at the rock they were interviewed by a Spanish official who was researching the orca problem ,apparently the issue with the orcas started after an encounter with fishing vessels close to Gibraltar ,

It’s our ocean too. They have no right to attack unprovoked. If this was a bear it would have been shot by now.

If you destroy their habitat and suck up all their food , you think they might get a bit pissed off. !! Luckily they haven’t got guns ( yet )

A harpoon would be no good. Most likely you'd just miss and lose the harpoon.

Now, two or three seal bombs tossed overboard wouldn't need to strike the whale for their concussions to have an effect.

This is an interesting point: Is it "our" ocean too? Or do the Orcas own it?

And how would we assert our right to it?

I don't think we have actually thought about a potential conflict between sea mammals and humans.

Land animals, like bears, we trap them and relocate them, or kill them. Have we thought about the same issue with sea mammals? Mostly we just protect them. But one can imagine a point where it gets out of hand.

Some of you think it is a joke, or hope the Orcas just grow up and stop. And animal rights folks say, 'its their ocean, we people should just give up using boats". Neither answer seems reasonable to me.
