Curious how the tree huggers were smoked out and the discussion turned to an argument. Curious how all accepted the tale related by the delivery capt without question.

Well this pod has been operating from Galicia (N Spain) down the Portuguese coast and is now between Trafalgar and Tarifa..
Around a dozen boats have been affected so far and despite media hype, in reality boats have only suffered varying amounts of rudder damage resulting in some boats needing to be towed in.
One does not need to be a 'Tree Hugger' to be aware..

While Orcas, along with all other marine mammals, are internationally "Protected," only one of the many distinct populations is officially "Endangered," and one other as "Depleted," which is not the same as "Endangered."

Maybe its not a tale... it seems to happen frequently with new encounters every few days:

It seems this is just one pod and Orcas are known to learn from each other. So if you catch & relocate this behavior may spread to other regions. Same if the pod splits up and the individuals travel in different regions.

Not every part of the world will tolerate such behavior, and other pods may get wiped out if they start doing similar things.

"Internationally protected" doesn't mean much in some regions of the world.

Stay off the water. Stay off my little part of the ocean. It's not the orca you need to fear here.
It must suck A$$ to live such cowardly life where anything you don't like or understand must be killed to make you feel safe.
People like you need to stay in mom and dads basement trolling the net, you never should never have left your mums teat.

Are you sure? That is exactly what we have done and continue to do, not to mention that whales have been slaughtered by humans mercilessly on mass for most of recent History.

Those who suggest that these whales mistake boats for a possible food source are ignorant and/or delusional. These are intelligent social animals that communicate with each other, adapt to new environments and form strong family/pod bonds.

Disabling vessels is done intentionally for what ever reason they have to do so. Just stay clear of these areas if you can.

I wonder if they could be distracted? If I was in that situation, maybe I would try something like attaching some chain or a small anchor onto a fender and throwing it over.

Just a point - the sea is THEIR HOME, we are the intruders!
Now I don't want an Orca using my boat as a chew toy so I might stay out
of their territory. Same reason I wouldn't walk around Dc or Chicago
in certain areas at night.

It’s our ocean too. They don’t have any right to attack unprovoked. We have a right to sail there undisturbed. I’ll put a wager on it they’ll be culled soon as these protected zones won’t work. How fast and when they are culled is the question.

Hmm by that logic I could make the case that I want people culled for polluting and over fishing?

That story is no joke. It actually happened, and caused a lot of distress and damage to the family.

Re: Orcas have destroyed our rudder

50 years ago I was presented with a speargun powerhead in exchange for a thesis in speargun dynamics. It fits on the end of the spear and can use a decent size (I seem to remember it was a 303) cartridge. Used for killing aggressive sharks. You could load a blank cartridge, and I am sure that would send a clear message to the orcas that they should find another game to play.
