get a little open sail boat .. like the precision 15. easy to trailer and nice big cockpit. later you could sell the little boat and upgrade to a larger cape dory

Fly to Texas or Florida and take some ASA courses. That will teach you to sail "real" boats and you can skip and the small boat stuff if you want.
