Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Regarding water. It doesn't take much to rig up a solar still, you'd likely find plastic in the ocean of large enough sizes if you didn't have some on board and apart from that somewhere to store salt water and the desalinated water.

AFAIK you should get at least 0.5 l / day, catch rainwater, stay out of the sun, eat raw bloody flesh etc. etc.

Solar still - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not belittling surviving at all, just saying it seems highly plausible.

EDIT: i suppose 0.5l/day is really for a fair sized piece of plastic, if you only have a couple of semi opaque shopping bags and wet tape then not so much.

Ok, that's it, I'm out of recipes.

16 months !!!

Wow, you'd be dreaming of camembert and bacon and standing headroom.
There's, um, turtle kebabs, turtle creole, turtle gumbo, pan fried, deep fried, stir fried. There's pineapple turtle and lemon turtle, coconut turtle, pepper turtle, turtle soup, turtle stew, turtle salad, turtle and potatoes, turtle burger, turtle sandwich... That's, that's about it.

He didn't have a solar array, electric oven and a spice rack !! Even if you did it would break/run out and then it's my recipe list back.

Also regarding water, did I miss anyone mentioning Dr Alain Bombard, who survived 63 days in part by drinking less than 1 litre of sea water a day to keep him hydrated?

Just was searching for link... and saw You posted

Alain Bombard had some followers, but the saltwater was really only a add-on to the rainwater, as I understand.

I just found this amazingly old looking site yet an excellent survival guide.

Survival at Sea

EDIT: * warning, snobby comment by a web developer...

A way to mitigate times where there was less rainwater and help to ration it by adding some seawater every day?

It might be pointless since the human body can survive on very little water, so rationing could possibly have worked.

Is the question: Is it better for the body to partly stress the kidneys and pass more water than stressing the body with semi-dehydration?

Do not know, really

The guy on the photos doesn't look really fat for me...
Rather swollen. May be it has something to do with kidney problems..?..
By the way, he got to the TV news even here

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

One big survival lesson to be learned here is that vegetarians or religious believes that do not allow you to eat anything with a heartbeat will most likely kill you in an extreme offshore survival situation like this.
------------------------------------
Albarengo survived 13 month in extreme survival mode.

His young friend Xiquel only survived for 4 weeks.

Albarengo said the boy, described as 15- to 18-years old, died a few weeks into the ordeal because he could not eat raw bird meat.

Alvarenga said he helplessly watched his fishing mate - known only as Ezekiel and aged between 15 and 18 - slowly die after four weeks under the searing heat of the sun.

He said he was unable to keep down and digest the raw food such as seagulls, turtles and fish they were forced to eat.

Alvarenga has told doctors he was forced to roll the body of his young companion over the side of the boat, but he stopped short of going into the details.

thats bs

you don't know ANYTHING about Xiquel OR Alvarenga to make general conclusions. Or give other examples.

For all you know Xiquel was a meat eating atheist. Cept' couldn't stand eating anything raw…allergic to beaks.

For all you know Alvarenga was a vegetarian, who suddenly had a taste for webbed feet. we know already he's religious.

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

What I do know is what Alvarenga stated. No more or no less.
Alvarenga and Xiquel were on the same boat in the same situation.
Alvarenga survived 13 months and Xiquel died after 4 weeks

The “Will to Live” is very strong for some and as shown here in this extreme offshore survival situation. This “Will to Live” truly made a difference in Alvarenga case.
-------------------------------------------
I interviewed two co-workers this morning to understand this a little better.

My vegetarian co-workers was raised from childhood with a devout vegetarian mom and he told me that in an extreme offshore survival situation like this he would most likely have reluctantly done what Alvarenga did to survive. He said his “Will to Live” would have made this possible.

My co-workers with religious believe’s that do not allow eating of anything with a heartbeat told me that in an extreme offshore survival situation like this his religion allows for fasting and death (not suicide) and that is most likely what he would do.

Gotta love the religious mind set. What other part of ones day to day normal thinking would allow for belief in something without even a drop of evidence??

Well.. I lived on red lentils and chapati for around 30 days rather than open any of the 19 x 1lb tins of corned beef I had on board.. did have 20 but that one went over the side after the 1st mouthful.. USA corned beef is *****..
Guess that makes me a fussy non-survivor..
