Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Smart guy. Catching seagulls and tearing off their wings so they can't escape, then keeping them alive for some time so he always had fresh meat "on the hoof"-pretty sharp. This is the sort of thing a third world villager would think of but many first worlders might not. No refrigeration required. 8-10 seagulls with their wings torn off in the boat at once must have been a nightmare, though. No wonder he's heavily scarred.

Alvarenga waved at passing ships but they just waved back.... Did he not wave correctly?

A man claims to be adrift on his upturned hull for 66 days off the Carolina coast:

Mr Jordan says that when first he saw the German container ship, he did not believe it was real.
But nevertheless, he knew what to do: "I waved my hands real slowly, and that's the signal: 'I'm in distress help me,'" he said.

Whoah, so someone has already written a book on Mr. Alvarenga's ordeal!

Apparently a reputable Chilean journalist and author has written up Alvarenga's account in a book titled 438 days.

There's a book and a movie deal there.

There is absolutely no publicity for this upcoming book. No interviews with the author, nothing. I find this very puzzling and a little worrying....

Personally, I think the book would get pretty boring after the first 150 days
