Is it usual for a marina to want to be added to insurance?

I'm looking to rent a slip for my boat, at a marina on a local lake.

The cover letter that accompanied the contract included the following language:

Quote:
The following items must be returned:
  • Certificate of Insurance naming <name of marina> as additionally insured
  • Signed contract
  • Information sheet
  • Payment for dock space / storage
Is it usual for marinas to require that they be listed as "additionally insured"?

Never in my experience, but apparently common in some areas (based solely on posts here).

It's not unusual. Have heard it a few times.

Very common in the US, and becoming common elsewhere. I have even had to do it for transient moorage in places. It is different than listing your home port, the actual company that owns the marina needs to be listed. It hasn't ever cost me anything to add this, just a phone call and they email me an addendum to add the marina.

I can only answer for Tidewater Virginia, but yes every marina here where we have kept our boat has required this.

Not uncommon at all. Does this marina move your boat for you?

Never had this requirement in Europe or the Caribe.. all they ask for is minimum insurance coverage of Third Party and above..
No Insurance, no entry.
Obviously some marinas have been caught out in claims courts and are trying to totally absolve themselves of any responsibilities within the marina,, regardless of cause.
The American Way.. Lay it off wherever possible..
In fact in my many visits to Cherbourg in the 80's and early 90's I was never asked about insurance when clearing in which was fortunate as none of the boats I crossed in were insured.. my first policy was in 96 when I headed for the Med.

not only common but smart of the marina to require this. It benefits them as well as the slip renters (us) by lowering the marina's insurance costs thereby lowering what they charge for rentals.

So before one sets off on a Snow Goose trip down the ICW to Florida its advisable to send a list of planned in advance marina stops for coverage to your insurers..???

It's rare for a marina to require it for transient dockage, usually they just care that you have insurance (if they ask at all). Being added as an additional interest is common for a seasonal slip though. My home marina is listed that way on my insurance.

This is for a long term slip.

Most transient marinas just want confirmation that you have insurance...and they would be foolish not to do so.

Had a boat in Spain at a marina run by a UK company for a few years...they wanted confirmation we had insurance, so not just a Yank thing.

My marina requires the same. Actually, you can just talk to the insurance, give them the address of the marina, and they will send them the information directly every time you renew the insurance.

Very common in the US. Insurance companies are familiar with the requirement and will have no issues with adding an additional insured. Don't forget, this is very much an international forum and different countries have different legal environments/systems which affect insurance provisions.

Re: Is it usual for a marina to want to be added to insurance?

I can only attest to the 2 marinas I’ve had long term moorage in here in the PNW, and yes, it’s a requirement. Others have noted why. The challenge is that not all insurance companies will do that. The first time I ran into this, I had to change companies to get that provision on my policy. A real PITA but a smart move by the marina.
