Re: How Not to Plan an Ocean Passage

Some people age better than others, my last Race was in 01, at Talledega where I broke my collar bone, broke a few ribs etc. Surgeon botched the repair, but still took way longer to heal than I was used to, and I was 43 at the time. I doubt I'll be worth much at 70, average age at death for an American Caucasian male is 76 I think?
So you guys that can sail off shore at 70 or more, impress me

I'm also in the detonated collarbone Club, too bad to put plates in. Believe it or not, helping a piano dealer friend move a brass framed German overstrung piano from 4 floors up, to his truck, sorted it out, hehe.
I always said I would get married at age 78. But now it's getting closer, I think I may have been a bit hasty, and may extend it to my 90's.
My grandfather's girlfriend died when he was about 95, and the loss killed him soon after.

Re: How Not to Plan an Ocean Passage
Age is only relative to ability.
Ive not seen anything 'so far' that would clearly indicate to me that the couple are affected by 'age'. They may be too old i just dont know from reports so far.
I do have serious concerns from reports so far whether the vessel is sea worthy enough for the task their considering, and i have some concerns whether the men are 'knowledgable' enough for such a trip.

God we are like brothers, broke my collar bone a year before we went cruising. I ended up needing surgery which ruined me for close to a year. 3-4 days a week in the gym had me back on the bike but it was a tough struggle.

Re: How Not to Plan an Ocean Passage
Well, here's the latest. They seem to have decided that this isn't working out after all, although the media reports are a bit confused (what else is new) about who is giving up first and why.
US sailor Bob Weise quits 'catastrophic' transatlantic pair - BBC News
American Sailor Steve Shapiro May Quit 'Disaster' Journey Across Atlantic - NBC News
To all who were of the opinion "They should just go for it": At least they tried, and presumably learned something.
To all who were of the opinion "They're a danger to themselves and others": At least they stopped before killing themselves and others, and presumably learned something.
Life-long learning - that's where I hope to be at 71. Although I may not take the same approach.

Re: How Not to Plan an Ocean Passage
Now, now, no American-bashing. I think I was accused of that much earlier in this thread and defended myself on the grounds that it's instinctive for Canadians.
But I'm okay with people-who-had-no-flaming-idea-what-they-were-getting-into-and-now-think-they-need-a-playboy-boat-bashing.
Go crazy.

Re: How Not to Plan an Ocean Passage
Boatman, you promised in another thread to stop with the personal anecdotes.
I say nay, I love your anecdotes, and want excuses to post my own. Old farts for anecdotes, unite.
And the fact that I'm actually going to click "submit" on this is a sure sign that I should be in bed. I'm outta here ...

Having threaded the needle in traffic on a scooter many times as an old codger, I can imagine you as a bullet proof youngun' teaching him not to laugh at ur scoot.
As for american's going bigger? We are a pretty diversified bunch of lunatics.
Where else could Trump lead in the polls?
