Forget Covid, Fukushima is what you should be really worried about

So after losing a couple of nuclear cores, creating a law which gives monster fines and 10 years in prison for any journalist to report anything but the government line, they are now going to release over a million tons of contaminated water straight into the ocean - But of course its been cleaned and is Totally safe

So get off your covid high horse and think about what this actually means.

It's not that big a deal, from an ecological perspective. The dumped water will only contain tritium, an isotope of hydrogen, and will be diluted with seawater before dumping, and the "tritiated" water should further disperse quickly.

It's pretty low risk, all things considered. The biggest fear is negative perceptions about fish caught in the area.

Re: Forget Covid, Fukushima is what you should be really worried about

Plant operator Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), has stored more than 1m tonnes of this water, in tanks at the site, but it is running out of space. Officials said that capacity would run out by 2022, and with around two years needed to build equipment to discharge the water, a decision on how to handle it was urgent.
Tepco has processed the water through a filtration plant (ALPS, the advanced liquid processing system), and said it had removed almost all of the radioactive nuclides. But there is no effective technology to separate tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, the lightest element.
Proponents insist dumping will be safe, arguing that tritium emits beta radiation, so weak that the health risks posed, will be minimal. The industry ministry (METI, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) estimates that, even if all the stored water were to be released into the environment, over a one-year period, the resulting radiation exposure would be less than a thousandth, of that received from natural background radiation.

The IAEA supports discharge of Fukushima Daiichi water.
MANY others do not!
A review of the management of treated water stored at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan has been carried out by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It says the two options under consideration for disposing of this water - discharge into the sea, and via vapour release - are both technically feasible.

If they were to use it to water a vegetable garden, and were willing to eat the produce themselves, and feed it to their children on a regular basis, than I would buy their line that it is SAFE!

Otherwise, there is a REASON that they have stored it, and it appears that the only REASON they want to release it is that they are running out of space to store it . . . . Looks to me like maybe more information may be needed before a decision is made . . . .

Wellll, even if whatever contaminent you're worried about was really dangerous, which it doesn't appear to be, a million tons ain't very much. If I did the math right, that's a cube 320 feet (about a hundred meters) per side...

Not suprising when conspiros use vagueness to sow alarm.

Please, tell us "what this actually means", and whilst you're at it, what the contaminant that you're so worried about actually is.

See GordMay's post. My understanding is there have been process delays filtering the stored water, but that will be resolved soon. After filtration of the long-lived radioactive components, the remaining water solution, with whatever tritium is present, will be released. The release is relying upon the principle of dilution with massive amounts of seawater to reduce the remaining radiation to an acceptable level. Tritium has a half-life of about 12 years and occurs naturally in water everywhere. There is context here, which is difficult for some people to understand or accept. Did you know bananas are radioactive?

Yep, about 40 olympic swimming pools, I'll leave it up to the OP to tell us the type and volume of contaminants in that volume of water.

Irradiated fish, squid and shellfish should keep without refrigeration for ages and make them easy to find in the dark.........!

Said it 40 years ago during Three Mile Island accident will say it again. Best way to insure safety of any nuclear power plant is to require ALL of its top level brass to live no more then 1-5 miles from it, downwind. Problem solved.

It's just not "totally safe" to ever go into the water.

On swimming pools...urine is generally ~germ free, but still:
...acesulfame potassium concentrations from the 22 pools and eight hot tubs a guide, the researchers then collected 15 samples from two swimming pools over a three-week period. They estimated that a 220,000-gallon pool (830,000 L, or one-third the size of an Olympic pool) contained about 20 gallons (75 L) of pee, and a 110,000-gallon (420,000 L) pool contained about 8 gallons (30 L) of pee."
