Re: Cyclone Debbie

Has anyone here ridden out a cyclone on the boat?

Not that it's a good plan compared to being elsewhere, but I imagine it could be quite the experience tied up to a bunch of mangroves deep in a creek.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

I did not like the idea that I have deserted the Flying French Cats being out there.

So hopefully this will set your fears to rest Factor.

I was and still am in Island Head creek ,got rolled 360 into the mangroves about 8AM .I set off my EPIRB and the search and rescue plane flew down from Cairns and dropped 2 containers on parachutes to me ,I couldn't reach them through the mangroves even though the closest one was only 40 meters away. The mangroves were too thick and I was too sore.
The rescue helicopter winched me off Saturday morning and took me to Rocky. They couldn't come the Friday ,not enough fuel to go from Mackay and return and too windy in Rocky.
I may have been OK except for the highest tide of the year. I hope to float off on the 19th.I'll be feeding the sandflys till then.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

Cape Moreton now has 50kt average with gusts to 60.
I went down to my boat at RQYS Manly last night to double up on the mooring lines and to stow the bimini.
Maybe we'll be done with Debbie by morning.

Qupte: "Not to be outdone, here is a flying mono"

Sorry there is no way you can slip such an Obvious Trimaran through the cat flap as a mono!

Central hull with two connected out riggers is a Tri in any ones book.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

Hoppy's photos show with certainty that those sails need to come off the boat in a big blow!

Solid 40 to 45 knots with highest gust I have recorded so fat at MBTBC Manly so far has been 50.8 knots.

Re: Cyclone Debbie

The rain started in earnest around 5pm in Beachmere. For the past two hours Montys Marina has been hammered and blown with strong winds. Surprisingly I still have power and as long as the rain doesn't start up again there isn't much chance of floating off the hardstand. Thankfully the council recently cleared the creek next to my yacht, which acts as a drain for adjacent properties and has flooded several times in the past.

Hope others are having a similarly good day out there.

Yeah, my bad

But fixed - one hull, deep keel and wing mast.
