NEVER on the backstay - nothing looks poorer, except maybe occasionally when I have seen a national ensign flown from the spreader. (Their own courtesy flag?)
Why not the backstay? The backstay is considered perfectly acceptable "flag ediquette" You're just not supposed to fly it more than 2/3 the way up the backstay.

A national ensign flown from the spreaders indicates Crew nationality (flown from port spreaders)

Well, you know, some might disagree.

We use a couple of these stay cleats, flag snaps & a "flag halyard" on our backstay.Mount cleats with eyes facing each other.

Got tired of the stern flagpole mounted flag getting wound up in boarding ladder & other transom stuff.
We like it. Each to their own I guess. / Len

Re: Canadian Flag Size?

Yes I like the cleats but can't get them as high as I'd like.
Maybe when I get my mast climbing stuff together I'll go up the backstay.

Not practical in my ketch, unless alongside or at anchor - where I put a proper-sized flag on a staff. At sea I have a smallish ensign run up the mizzen backstay at a height commensurate with the flag-staff.

Just had to say it. LOL

It's actually smaller in land mass (don't let Mercator projection fool you) and only slightly larger in total area including territorial (fresh) water.

Re: Canadian Flag Size?

So, Canada is larger than the US. We may have more water (a good thing) and a lot less people (also a good thing)... but we’re still bigger than the US. 😀

Re: Canadian Flag Size?

And back to the OP'point of Canadian flag size aboard a sailboat, and the drift into flag location.

HMCS Oriole is the sail training vessel of the Royal Canadian Navy based at CFB Halifax in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is a sailing ketch, currently the oldest commissioned vessel in the Royal Canadian Navy, and also the longest serving commissioned ship.

Is that national ensign flying from the mizzen boom topping lift on a Navy TRAINING sailboat? Anybody want to argue about its size, location, or otherwise "correct" the Oriole's Captain?

Etiquette is 95 percent respect and only 5 percent "rules & regs".

You know when you live next to a biker club house, you don't argue. You don't fuss about things that go bump in the night. You say, Please, Sir and Thank You, Sir and you sell them stuff they need...

Hey, it's a living. (Cannabis is legal in Canada, in less than 4 hours!)
