Re: Boat names, and the side which you sit.

You know, the only one who really needs to like your boat's name is you!

It doesn't really need to be easy to say,be understood, spell, or pronounce as long as you like it.

I never would have expected the number of people who buy a boat and keep the old name as the number that have so posted this. I renamed both mine without any consideration of "luck", it was part of making the boat's ours!

I agree, but I must consider our life style.

We are very group oriented, and we do not necessarily want to limit our interaction with other people just with the name of a boat.

I sort of go on the premise, if they don't like it enough not to socialize, I wouldn't like them anyway.

I really doubt this would happen, as most cruisers at least decide, after spending some time, that a person is a loon.

I'd like to mildly suggest that this forum's name be changed to:

New Sailors' Forum.

Can't figure why you would post that on this thread.

But thanks for the sideline.

You're correct Ptect, it wasn't neighborly. What that was about is that so many posters have no knowledge, or worse, no respect for the nautical ways of doing things. It bums me out. Apologies where needed.

No apology needed.

I do understand some people want or expect things to be done in a traditional manner.

Unfortunately, if we all did the same thing, there would be no "flavor" to the soup, and we would be bored with it.

I find some people have no humor, or can't seem to find it. I believe that is sad. Humor is one of the best things a human possess. The capability to enjoy without any excess emotions. There are no drawbacks, if they can find the humor of things.

This is why I plan to use the humor route. If you can make a person laugh, you may lift his spirits for a short while, and hopefully longer. If someone doesn't find the humor, it's no lost for them.

We discount so many things due to tradition. I'm not saying the traditional route is wrong. It just isn't the way I wish to go. I'm very happy there are those which believe they must adhere to tradition, it keeps the traditions alive.

If you knew me, you would know, there are many traditions which I hold dear. I was in the military, and it made an impact. Some times, I must veer from tradition because my will and my freedom will allow.

Please don't take my methods as an insult to the tradition, it is not meant to be.

Re: Boat names, and the side which you sit.

I used to see a guy going up and down the ICW on a strange-looking, probably home made, steel boat that looked like it had seen better days. But, the guy was out there doing it, motoring slowly along, enjoying the trip. The boat was named Old Fart.

Re: Boat names, and the side which you sit.

I've always thought of Phucan Chet names that match the boat in one way or another or events it will be enduring. The latest is related to the color and how much junk I've installed on it in the past 10 years.

Re: Boat names, and the side which you sit.

All of our boat names have a personal meaning to us as the owners. Boat names can be a great conversation starter with others you meet along the way. Names using a play on words such as yours are interesting and funny. However, our boat is our home and I wouldn't want my home named something as personal as the status of your "Dixie."

As we like to do a lot of fun daysailing on our Dragonfly, I made a suggestion which my wife nixed in no uncertain terms.

I thought it was fitting.

The name?

"Afternoon Delight"

Oh, trust me, the "Dixie" is not a boat name I have or would consider.

Think about the adults laughing and the kids wanting to know what was so funny. Not a good situation for a crowded anchorage.

I tend to be more funny across the board, for even the children.

I agree. But on the other hand, does one want to confuse one's fine boat with a rubber dinghy?
