At least the kid spent some time on the water. He got frightened a bit. He built something, he tried something. Adventure? I bet he got it. If not, then what else?

The skipper seems to be of a more 'distinguished' age, perhaps that is always a relative statement depending on author and audience...

I don't understand the USCG towing him; need a tow between Catalina and LA(and don't have a towing contract), and you'll get hit with a $1200 or so towing bill. A friend of ours had an engine failure about a quarter mile outside Santa Barbara, no wind, several hundred $$ towing bill.

May have been a case of a commercial tower declining the job, at which point the CG is free to tow if they feel it's appropriate.

Yann is doing many things right. One of them was designing a 'downwind boat' for a predominantly downwind route.

Just look at his averages on the passages. He IS fast.
