Where is Ocean Reef, FL?

So I read the NWS marine forecast with fair regularity, and every once in a while I wonder...where are some of these boundaries that the NWS uses to describe the forecast area? My local forecast reads:
ATLANTIC COASTAL WATERS FROM JUPITER INLET TO OCEAN REEF OUT TO 60
NM AND GULF COASTAL WATERS FROM EAST CAPE SABLE TO CHOKOLOSKEE OUT
20 NM AND CHOKOLOSKEE TO BONITA BEACH OUT 60 NM...INCLUDING THE
WATERS OF BISCAYNE BAY AND LAKE OKEECHOBEEI can find most of these (Jupiter Inlet is particularly easy, since I live on it...), but have no idea where Ocean Reef is. Help?

Hi,

i think i can be of help even though i am from Germany. I was allowed
to live some time in Florida and on the first Island of the Key's there
is a Club called "Ocean Reef". Unfortunately i do not have a chart
from this area, but search there, i think that's what it is.

Lampe is correct, Ocean Reef is a private club on the very north tip of Key Largo Key.

Thats it...Took a boat in there for a rich guy once. The crew was not allowed to hang out in the "marina", it was only for owners and their guests. A bit unreal like an artificial place with only wealthy people allowed...

Obviously that's why the government folks at NWS know about it and I don't...

What an arcane reference point!

Thanks all, for solving one of the great mysteries of my life!

Actually Ocean Reef is a logical spot as it is the beginning of the Keys, proper. It is also pretty famous in it's own right--Nixon & Rebozo used to fish out of there. Very tight-a$$ed.

Well, I can't agree about it being a logical spot. Technically, Ocean Reef it doesn't exist as a formal location, it's a private club on Key Largo. Hardly a practical reference point in my opinion. By contrast, Jupiter Inlet and Cape Sable are pretty obvious in their locations. pete

It is at the north end of Key Largo about 25 miles south of Miami...There are $10 million houses in a mosquito infested mangrove swamp and the marina charges, I am told, $7.50 a ft per night.

Given my "druthers," I'd much rather hang with the Coral Reefers than the Ocean Reefers.

Recession? What recession? To judge by the recent sale of a slip at the Ocean Reef Club, the Florida real estate market is doing just fine, thank you.

* * *

"KEY LARGO, Fla., May 07, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- A megayacht slip has sold for a record $4 million at Key Largo's prestigious Ocean Reef Club, today announced Russell Post, President of Russell Post Sotheby's International Realty who represented both parties during the transaction.

"The $4 million slip, located on the T-Dock, can accommodate yachts up to 165 feet in length. The previous record sale at Ocean Reef for a similar size dock was $2 million."

Ocean Reef Club

I actually stopped there once on a jaunt from Miami to Marathon.

I had no idea what it was - but there was enough depth for me and my old, but beautiful Folkboat to get in and search for a convenience store. Me, I looked like the "WRECK OF THE HESPERUS"
I was greeted at the dock by two uniform-clad dockhands who escorted me to the plush interior where I used the loo and was then driven in a golf cart through the massive, opulent grounds to the "store" which was a mini, overpriced Albertson's. I bought a pack of Marlboro's and two tall cans of Budweiser and in horror paid the $16.96. I was too embarrassed (and in need of a smoke) to run out of there with nothing.
On the ride back to the dock I was frantically quizzing my "guards" about the type of place I was in!!!! They couldn't hide their amusement.

We got back to the boat and they filled a couple of my empty water jugs (for free), and off I went!
