I kind of wondered that myself. Either he has satellite or he is just spoofing us one way or another.

Regardless the whole story doesn't seem to add up. Either Davinia made some very poor decisions or is trying to skip out on paying his or her bills in Brazil.

Hope we are not all aiding and abetting here. Some further explanation might be helpful.

I stand corrected. Hope all is well and she was able to square her issues away. I haven't begun cruising yet, but I do wonder what happens when one does not clear out of a country properly (beyond having a difficult time returning in the future)?

Besides causing a big hassle clearing in the next one?

While I was in Panama a 75 ft sailing yacht with a paid captain and crew hired an agent to forge clearance papers from Costa Rica.

The boat had to return to Costa Rica to check out, the captain lost his job, and the agent lost his license and was removed from the waiting list for jobs with the Canal.

I can't believe this story completly, theres got to be more to it then what they have told us on here!! if it's as stated, Brazil could and would have put them in contact with there consulate there! and with a police report, there problems would at least been partialy taken care of IE passports, paper work on the vessel ect !! and credit cards could have been replaced within a few days !! Sounds Hinky to me !! Just our idea on this !!

Re: No Clearance, No Passport & Going to Trinidad

This is VERY dodgy. Davinia says they "did not clear IN or OUT of Brazil".. and "have NO documentation to allow us to enter ANY country - even in the EU" My question is, WHERE did they come from? Did they not clear out of ANYWHERE? This story has more holes than a fishing net. I would agree with "Go back to Spain, go directly to Spain. Do not stop ANYWHERE." and would add "Sell your boat and go do a course on "How to sail overseas" before you leave home again.

Re: No Clearance, No Passport & Going to Trinidad

If the boat did not clear INTO Brazil then their zarpe from their PREVIOUS port of call can be used to clear into the landfall port. Their IDs will have to be confirmed by their embassy/consulate there so they must go to a country where there is one.

Barnie brings up a good point. If they left spain with the proper paperwork and have not checked in to brazil then they can just go somewhere else to check in and pretend they never went to brazil. Assuming of course they werent in brazil for a long time. It might be tough to explain a year long passage from spain to trinidad...

Or why their passports might turn up in a country they haven't checked into

However, I wonder if the passports and credit cards were taken as security against a debt, or by the authorities to stop someone doing a runner.

Why wouldn't you check in on arrival in another country? because you didn't want them to know you were there. So is it the people on the boat that's the problem? or is it the boat that is stolen or has an outstanding mortgage on it?

Sadly I don't think we will find the answer to this.

Don't get us (Bermuda) involved.
We presently have a trial taking place where a Europian sailor put in here for repairs---with $48 million of cocaine that he forgot to declare.
And a loaded 9mm pistol.
That gun alone gets him up to 12 yrs-no parole IIRC.

"with $48 million of cocaine that he forgot to declare"
Well, such a small amount was obviously just for personal consumption. In the fine tradition of British Public School Punishments, one would think he would be excused from all drugs charges--if he sat down and consumed it all, non-stop. Fair's fair.

As for the LOADED gun...if it isn't loaded, it isn't a gun, it is just a nutcracker. Which leaves me failing to see why having a loaded gun should be any more of a crime than having an unloaded gun. An UNloaded gun is really silly, there are better ways to crack nuts, or defend oneself.

Sounds like the fellow definitely needs help.
