Myrtle Beach Anchorage??

OK. Have at it. Pick on me. Haha.

I have one of these visitors flying in sometime soon on this trip to visit me.

trouble is, there aren’t that many airports left. Myrtle Beach doesn’t seem too expensive to fly into and it’s a little bit off-season.

When I look at it from an anchoring perspective, it doesn’t look so good. And I don’t remember it being good when I have gone through in the past. I remember it being a mindnumbing straight line with some concrete ramps on each side or something.

I noticed on some charts that there are some widened areas that are 12ft deep.

Trying to plan ahead a little bit and see where I can stop to meet her.

does anyone know if you can anchor in Myrtle Beach? and where are some good places are?

Re: Myrtle Beach Anchorage??

Chotu is your mast 65’+? If so I don’t think you can get through that section of the ICW. Nearest ocean access to Myrtle Beach airport would probably be Southport (Cape Fear River entrance). Wilmington NC airport is a little further north and it’s a pretty good airport. It’s close to Wrightsville Beach (Masonboro inlet) you can anchor there and pick up shore transportation.
Edit: Even 64’ might be too much.

No no no.

i’m trying to catch up to my mast. It went north on a tractor trailer truck.

I need 13' feet bridge clearance.

Checking out Wrightsville beach. Is there anywhere right near that airport in Myrtle Beach?

I suppose Wilmington could work also. But this is a soon type of thing and I am pretty far away still. I’m not sure I could make Wilmington in time.

Re: Myrtle Beach Anchorage??

Only anchorages I can think of around Myrtle Beach would be to the south of Myrtle Beach in the Waccamaw River or to the north in either Calabash or behind the sand dunes next to the Little River Inlet.
The cheapest marina at $1 a foot is Osprey in Socastee, which surprisingly isn’t to far from the airport. The other marinas closer to town are $3+ per foot.

Really in Myrtle Beach you have two anchorages. To the north at the NC state line there is Calabash Creek. To the south there are places to anchor in the Waccamaw River. In the middle... not so much. The route is mostly a dug canal with near continuous residential and commercial development. For us it is a day's travel from one to the next.

Re: Myrtle Beach Anchorage??

There's usually enough space to anchor near Bucksport marina, and even better just off Wacca Wache marina. Both progressively further from the Myrtle Beach airport.

Osprey is a pretty decent place, definitely inexpensive as marinas go. Nothing much nearby, though.

There's a decent anchorage at Wrightsville Beach. Off the main ICW on a bight over toward the ocean. Haven't ever used it, but we've seen boatloads of boats anchored in there...

Re: Myrtle Beach Anchorage??

May not fit logistically, but is Carolina Beach still available, prox. Mid-way between the two?

Have you considered flying her into Savannah / Hilton head?

Those are long gone. Might have been good though.

There are only 2 airports left.

Myrtle Beach and Wilmington.

Myrtle Beach is the one I can time properly.

Re: Myrtle Beach Anchorage??

Bird Island and vicinity is a good option. It's my stomping grounds. Private message me if you want more details but an Uber from MYR to Little River is around $70. You're understanding of the area is spot on. Few anchorages in MB but a few in surrounding areas although we and others have dropped anchor on the ICW near The Boat House in MB. A short distance from the airport. Not an ideal anchorage for many sailboats, but doable. Would suggest bow and stern anchors to prevent swinging. Far less expensive for an Uber and on most Sundays the Boathouse features live music from well known artists. Worth considering.
