Cost of Keeping a Boat in BVI

Hello there

I was wondering how much would it cost me to keep a 44-50' boat in the marina in anywhere BVI for a month... any other costs, taxes ? I seen couple of posts about cruising permits etc...

does it matter where the boat is registered ?

I am thinking of getting it registered in Delaware.

what would be the cheaper alternative in the area ?

thanks. / mark

Cost for one month is going to be US$600-800. I presume though that you really want to know how much per month for a long period, maybe full time?

If you want to keep a boat in the BVI year round then you have to pay the temporary importation tax. This is ( or was last year ) US$200 for a privately used 40ft boat or US$600 if you are chartering. If you have paid for temporary importation then you don't have to pay for the cruising permit. Cruising permit is around US$4 per person aboard per day for a non-BVI registered boat.

If you are a US citizen then the USVI is probably a cheaper option for you.

Jeannius - I keep my boat in Totrtola, BVI. Last year I looked at moving it to St Thomas USVI because it is cheaper to fly into STT. I found that marinas in STT are MUCH more expensive than BVI. Just sayin....

Which marina in Tortola are you using? Which marinas did you check on St Thomas?

Rubikoop - My notes say I checked Crown Bay Marina, Boat Haven/Compass Point, Independent Boat Yard, in STT. I keep my boat on a mooring at the East End of Tortola at a small charter operation. I understand that Red Rock (in Fat Hogs Bay) has moorings for $12.50/ft/mo as of last year.

Interesting. I keep my boat at Independant in a slip and pay less than $12.50. I'm not aware of anybody legally renting moorings for long term use on St Thomas. I think there is a market for it but it doesn't seem possible to get a permit to do so.

Hello Rubikoop,

The quote I got from Independent Boat Yard was $13.75/ft/mo and $17/ft/mo during Aug/Sep/Oct KEPT IN THE YARD! Plus $100 to launch when I wanted it in the water to use. Guess they didn't have any slips available but didn't want to pass up on the revenue. Never heard of this kind of arrangement.

Boat Haven/Compass Point was $18/ft. Crown Bay was outrageous.

There is frequently a waiting list for slips. For short term and hauling during hurricane season the prices are what the market will bare. As you've discovered.

I see my inbox was full. Just made room. Feel free to PM again.
