Cartagena Haulout Recommendations

We plan to haul out in Cartagena sometime in mid May to a do a bottom job, install a new depth sounder and refresh the boat a little. Will probably peel the hull and let it dry for a few months.

Has anyone hauled out in Cartagena recently? Here in Panama I have heard the yards can be full in May. Looking for yard recommendations so I can make a booking.

Re: Cartagena Haulout Recommendations

we went in to Cartagena in 2001 and in 10-11 we used todamar -- we did a bit of research and it was really the only one there that we were comfortable with -- not sure of your boat size but I think one yard could not handle our boat - 40' - and the other did big boats -- they let us stay on board while we painted

BUT if you are going to spend any time in Cartagena I would do that first and make all the arrangements to paint and when all the visiting of Cartagena is done go ahead and haul and paint - to club de pesca for fuel and get the heck out of dodge -- the water in Cartagena is so dirty it will destroy your new paint very quickly --

and we had good results from todamar and would not hesitate to haul there again

Re: Cartagena Haulout Recommendations

Thanks for the review of Todomar. The choice seems to be between Todomar and Manzanillo.

Thanks also for the heads up on fouling in Cartegena. Our plan is to sail into Cartagena and directly to the haulout facility. When we leave, plan to leave Cartegena as soon as the boat is splashed.

The new hualout in Almerante/ Bocas is open and has lots of room, I hauled there in November and all went well. They are limited to a 21 foot beam.

if you have not been to Cartagena take your time to visit one of the most beautiful cities we have been to in the caribbean -- the old city is simpy incredible -- it is very safe as we were walking around downtown at 0300 with no issues -- we were out many times at night and a great town -- like all cities there is one section that you do not want to visit anytime and people will tell you where that is but over all the safest place we were in the entire caribbean -- and simply wonderful
