I'm a welding engineer and I also run my own business, I've been doing rather well for myself.

Sometimes you just have to say what everybody’s thinking.

He's clearly been educated enough to reason incorrectly.

I’m sorry. Did I hurt your feelings? It’s just that I don’t run across so many people like you who are self educated in advanced fields.

It is truly remarkable that your understanding of calculus and statistics comes only from your independent study. Even Albert Einstein went to school to learn those things.

Those of us who actually did put the time in to learn the material find people like you a bit tiresome. It’s like the issue of stolen valor in the military. Let’s face it : You didn’t do the work. So your opinions on subjects which are clearly beyond your ken must be suitably discounted.

Geometry and Algebra were taught at the age of 11 when I was at school.. but then the curriculum was set by the University of Cambridge.. the one in England
Trigonometry.. kinda important for navigation when I started out, unlike today when you likely use a computer program do do your calculations for you..
But then, in life I have found the first to besmirch the intellect of others merely demonstrates a lack of confidence in one's own..
Anyone can Google a subject and post a link that supports their agenda..
But hey.. I bow to your intellectual superiority..

Re: They Lived In a Pandemic Bubble Now Covid Has Arrived

[QUOTE=seandepagnier;3574032]Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it not true that you will likely (more likely than not) get Covid and spread it regardless of vaccination status? This is evident in that it spreads regardless of if the population is vaccinated or not.

You are wrong, very wrong. I'll re-post this recent snapshot of CA cases sorted by vax. status, which is typical of the past year.

Of course you might say that this is a vast mis-information conspiracy headed by Soros and Besos, involving every known health care provider, facility, state and national Health departments. As well, of course, the Big Lie, co-opting everyone else.

Do a little math and as a healthy person of middle age you have a 1 in 1.6 million chance of death from covid. Hardly Russian roulette. To give some context, according to DAN you are about 8x as likely to die on a single scuba dive (1/200,00) source

In fact, for a 30 year old, if you figure he or she has 50 years of life left, then on average getting the shot (we'll assume it's 100% effective) would only get you 16 minutes of additional life. Given that it would likely take you longer to get in your car and drive to CVS (not to mention risking getting sick for several days) the shot will likely produce a net negative enjoyable lifespan.

I guess I'm the stupid one though for getting my information from the CDC and NIH and actually doing some critical thinking instead of parroting talking points.

You may be getting your data from the CDC but I would offer your “critical thinking” is flawed. Simply put you are using hindsight. In real time you have limited data as to how dangerous the virus is and how/if it will mutate into a even more dangerous variant.

At this time there is data to show that the latest variant is less deadly the feared. Great news and we can adjust accordingly!

What the data does overwhelming show is that the vaccine is safe, effective and a big part of the solution. Why is that so difficult to comprehend?

I have avoided getting covid in my latter 70's (where I get a new co-morbidity every year) by wearing a mask indoors and getting 3 jabs. I can also say with even more than your 100% certainty that I have not infected anyone else.

I don't use language like "I know people who" or "I know some people who".

I turn to more useful information like https://ourworldindata.org/covid-deaths-by-vaccination

Getting a vaccination is even more a no-brainer than not smoking.
How about taking a week off from myocarditis?

I'm with you. If someone can't read and understand these graphs, they need more education. Fortunately Darwin's law will weed them out.

Myocarditis: COVID-19 is a much bigger risk to the heart than vaccination
https://theconversation.com/myocardi...ination-174580

Based on a study out of Israel, the risk of post-vaccine myocarditis is 2.13 cases per 100,000 vaccinated, which is within the range usually seen in the general population. This study is consistent with others in the United States and Israel which put the overall incidence of post-vaccine myocarditis between 0.3 and five cases per 100,000 people.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of myocarditis after infection with COVID-19 is much higher, at 146 cases per 100,000. The risk is higher for males, older adults (ages 50+) and children under 16 years old. Soccer player Alphonso Davies, 21, of Canada’s national men’s team, was sidelined by heart inflammation after having COVID-19.

I see Tonga is still lagging behind - 61% of total population compared with 89% in what can be considered a fully vaccinated country
https://ourworldindata.org/covid-vaccinations

And New Zealand has changed the rules as Tonga cases more than double over three days.
