A Little Good News

A Little Good News*
“... Just once how I'd like to see the headline say
Not much to print today, can't find nothing bad to say
Because
Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town
Nobody OD'd, nobody burned a single building down
Nobody fired a shot in anger, nobody had to die in vain
We sure could use a little good news today ...”

This is the hopeful, heartwarming side of COVID-19 — the spirit of togetherness bred among community members.
It's been dubbed "caremongering" — an online movement offering good deeds and helpful hands. Whether it is getting groceries, giving a ride to medical appointments, or picking up prescriptions, a lot of people want to help.

Re: A Little Good News

Pollution Levels Have Plummeted:
Pollution and greenhouse gas emissions have fallen across continents as countries try to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.
In the first three months of 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic swept around the globe from China, and governments began shutting down businesses and transportation, satellites detected sharp declines in NO2 levels, compared with the same period in 2019. In the U.S., the stay-at-home orders began in March. The drop in NO2 has been most pronounced in cities and along major transportation corridors.
Compared with this time last year, levels of pollution in New York, have reduced by nearly 50%.
In China, the drops in pollution resulting from coronavirus shutdowns, likely saved between 53,000 and 77,000 lives — many times more than the direct toll of the virus — according to calculations done by Marshall Burke*, an Earth system scientist at Stanford University.

The declines are sure to be only temporary.
But the cleaner pandemic skies do show, how fast we can bring down pollution, when we reduce our burning of fossil fuels.

The law of generosity combating coronavirus in Pakistan
As Pakistan imposes greater social distancing measures to combat coronavirus, a Muslim law of generosity is helping to save those out of work.
Outside grocery stores in Karachi, a remarkable scene has been unfolding over the past two weeks. Instead of rushing home after shopping to avoid being exposed to coronavirus, many Pakistanis are pausing outside to offer food, money or other charity to the many people on the street with no “place” to shelter-in-place. These generous offers are often accompanied with a request to the recipient: “Pray that [the coronavirus] ends soon.”

Re: A Little Good News

Also, Gord,

A British doctor recently extended a challenge to his surgeon colleagues, such as orthopaedic surgeons (who were first to have their practices cut, as all non-urgent surgeries were postponed) for them to contribute by taking an ICU nursing shift. The UK doctors did, in fact, take up the challenge and it has now expanded. The doctors of one of our large hospitals here in Toronto (one of whom is a friend) have adopted this as well.

Cool, eh?
Warmly,

Maybe 'Mother Nature' is trying to send (or, more accurately, unequivocally sending) a message about the true value of the current global socio-economic-political system. Not to mention 'human' nature.

No worries though, those numbers are all 'fake news' and a hoax anyway. Just look at the source...

Re: A Little Good News

Yes... I've quick to see the possible negative outcomes of all this authoritarian activity we're seeing everywhere, but there are many positives responses as well. And hopefully some of these will become the long-term "lessons learned."

One big one for me is how quickly all developed nations have moved to install some sort of Guaranteed Basic Income. Direct transfers of wealth to individuals (not only business, as we saw in the last big crisis: the Great Recession) is now both acceptable and desirable.

Ex: Spain is moving to establish permanent basic income in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic

We've also learning how essential public services like healthcare systems are to everyone. Hopefully this will lead to a strengthening of these systems, as opposed to the continual pressure most have faced to cut and squeeze.

And, we're learning to value the people that our societies traditionally treat like crap. The front line workers in stores, healthcare facilities, essential public services, and the like are often the lowest paid, yet in this time of crisis are showing how essential they are to all of us.

I have hope that we'll remember these lessons once the dust settles on this public health crisis.

Re: A Little Good News

MerciMeals MTL is a GoFundMe project, to raise money for meals for health-care workers, on the front lines.
“We are a group of third year medical students from McGill who are looking to help the frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. While our clinical rotations have been put on pause in the context of the current circumstances, healthcare workers are working around the clock and risking their own health to fight for the lives of those affected by the coronavirus.
Inspired by the generosity of local restaurants who have donated meals to frontline workers, we developed this platform to facilitate and organize the provision of healthy and nutrient rich meals to the healthcare providers in our community. With this initiative, we aim to also help support local restaurants during these difficult times.
Our goal is to provide at least 1 meal a day to different medical wards that are affected in teaching hospitals across the Island of Montreal. As our initiative expands, so will our goal.
100% of donations will be going towards buying meals..."

America's Food Fund
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 37 million people struggled to know where their next meal might come from on a daily basis, a number that we are seeing rise at an exponential rate.
We have an opportunity to come together to support our neighbors in this critical time of need.
The goal of America’s Food Fund — launched by Leonardo DiCaprio, Laurene Powell Jobs and Apple, along with the Ford Foundation — is to help ensure that all people have reliable access to food.

Re: A Little Good News

I think the apparent reduction is deaths from atmospheric pollution is really just due to traffic deaths being reduced to near zero during the shutdown. It has nothing to do with cleaner air or the lack sea-level rise.

Goggles for Docs
Some 23,000 ski goggles have been given to hospitals, by skiers, through a group called Goggles for Docs, and they are hugely appreciated, because they are both very comfortable and very protective.

HIGH PRIORITY IN-KIND DONATION NEEDS
This, is from the Montefiore Health System, but your local hospital(s) will have similar needs.
In addition to monetary donations (which we accept with gratitude for Montefiore’s Critical Response Care Fund and Einstein’s Critical Response Research Fund), our medical teams are in dire need of donated materials during this crisis. The below list provides a sampling of our current in-kind donation needs
