Re: How to not look like a Gringo.

I would not and you should not ask "how to not look like gringo", you should look and be what you are.

For that matter, I would ask myself what went wrong with that (my) country when you (I) have to hide my own origin/nationality.

It's not a matter of hiding your citizenship, it's a matter of insensitivity, disregard or disrespect for the country you happen to be visiting.

Being a "Gringo" or "stupid [nationality] tourist" is more a matter of attitude and behaviour than appearance. Appearance is simply a clue, and often the first offense, as this thread has explained.

Re: How to not look like a Gringo.

question of the day--would you prefer the term gringo over the older ugly american......or do you prefer to be called an ugly american instead of gringo....

is all in the actions, more than the dress code....

Re: How to not look like a Gringo.

rodl...odam one of my hoochiemomma shoes went sunk in muck...and my dress got torn in that last hoolie--good thing i brought now soaking wet other clothing--rodlmao.....

ask me if i really care....isnt what is the superficial crap one shows, is the human being under that bs that is important.

do you mingle with locals.
do you eat at the restaurants with all locals dining and no one speaking your language?
do you have friends who reside in the area...and will you eat with them in their homes....
do you argue loudly over insignifiant things...in public
do you .........

looking in the mirror will only get you to see what you see in that mirror--doesnt relate your behavior or attitude....

if you try to be someone else, you compound the gringo attitude...go figger.

besides, only hot latinas can wear and walk in hoochie momma shoes--they move different--is due to the puritan ethic we still follow to a degree in usa, which was founded on that ethic--ye think it is gonn a completely disappear just because ye wear a pair of shoes in public ye cannot even walk in??? lol
happy sails

at least the lady in the white bikini has the bod for it--i have seen much worse offenses--like speedos on the fat man, tight spandex on that middle aged fat woman. and that is just downtown.....

Re: How to not look like a Gringo.

Do you walk around with snot running from your nose? Do you swear loudly in front of small children? Do you breath in peoples faces even when you know you've been eating garlic?

Do you use deodorant? Trim your hair? Wash your face? Flush the toilet in a public restroom?

All are examples of social behavior that Americans take for granted. We're only talking about social behavior that Latins take for granted, and that I for one have learned to appreciate and enjoy. It doesn't change who you are. It makes you more socially acceptable. American's are taught to reject social acceptability, but Latins revere it.

In Miami and Barcelona, only Gringas drink beer - considered by the Hoochie-Mamas to be a disgusting habit for a woman.

I'm not sure about South America or Mexico.

And only Gringos drink from a can

Tacos are not a "latin" food. They are derived from the Indian culture. I love me a good Indian fry-bread like nobody's business, but it's definitely not latin. I especially love to eat them over a sink, wiping the goo from my face with my shirt tails and washing them down with a warm can of Tecate

Amongst the latins I know, which is certainly not the whole community, Mexicans are not considered "latin". I would say that are considered to be more closely linked to the native american culture than latin culture.
