A large-scale police search and rescue effort is underway for two men whose boat was reported missing off the coast of Adelaide.

South Australian Police said the men, aged 57 and 48, left Coffin Bay near Port Lincoln in a boat named "Margrel" around 3pm on Thursday.

They were headed to Goolwa, some 300km away.



The men contacted a friend around 11pm on Friday to say the vessel was experiencing engine trouble and that they were not in distress but were planning to divert their course to nearby Kangaroo Island.

The friend told police yesterday she had not heard back from the pair after that first call. A police search was then launched.

Authorities today resumed an aerial search, along with the help of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and members of the Royal Australian Air Force.



The boat is known to have the hull identification number RF83S.

A SA Police spokesman told 9News.com.au at 2.15pm (AEST) the search is ongoing.
