SV Yara safe

Today we came across SV Yara in the north pacific ocean with 3 French people on it, Thier 44 foot boat became dismasted and they had no fuel. They have been bobbing around drifting for a week
The captain was injured but will be ok. They abandon the boat and we took all 3 on board with us and continued on our journey to Panama. Please check your chain plates. This was apparently the failure they experienced that left them stranded. I'm not currently in my boat but I'm on SV Zingaro with Captain James. He did a fantastic job keeping his boat in position for the transfer of the crew of Yara, Thier supplies and personal Items. In all he spent 4 hours circling the boat as all of us did the transfer.

It was on the Boat Watch Facebook group four days ago but I don't know how JRCC Honolulu found out but they did know position, course and speed.

Re: SV Yara safe

We did get a call from lt underwood after we spoke to her earlier about a flare we had seen going up. In her return call she informed us they were out there. Because we were already passing by them, we only had to alter our course a few degrees, so as far as ocean goes, they were basically in our path.

Awesome job guys! Tell James we say 'hello". I thought I was going to see him at the Annapolis Boat Show, but I see he's doing much more important things.

I told him you said hello, when we arrive in Panama we are flying to Morro Bay to pick up my oyster 485 and sail it to panama. I hope that passage goes without excitement.

Re: SV Yara safe

Good advice Check chainplates, cleats and all deck fittings.
In 2015 crossing the Pacific friends of our were rescued by another sailboat after their forestay deck fitting ripped out of the deck leaving a hole forward.
Then their rudder snapped off the stern leaving another hole .
They were taking on water and had no steerage. Older yachts have hidden risks if ocean crossing. The Pacific Ocean puts a constant stress on all systems.
The average modern boat has no backing plates on deck hardware and fittings. I almost lost a stern cleat in the Panama canal crossing, had no backing plates.

I wouldn't call that a modern boat problem. A lot of boats (old and new) have inadequately backed deck hardware. Lower end production boats are generally worse for this regardless of age.

Good find
Do you know if they decided / needed to cut mast and rig free after it came down?
