Great Lakes Marina Fire Muskegon Michigan

There is a fire at this marina in one of the storage buildings. It started about 11;30 AM today and fire fighters are still at the scene.

No one hurt. Millions of dollars in damage.

I used to store there. As I recall that building is mostly rack storage for speedboats, but this time of year the open floor would be full of larger boats, about half sailboats. And they really jam them in there.

It’s surprising how unsafe indoor storage is. You think you are paying extra money for safety and treating your boat better. But between fires and roof cave ins from snow, I have known a lot of people that have lost their boats to indoor storage.

I wouldn't worry about snow load in a good storage building, but I've always worried about the fire situation for indoor storage. Our boat is in indoor storage right now, packed in tightly as usual. I'd really like to see proper fire suppression in the storage buildings, but at least ours has fire detection and a fairly high roof. So if something goes up and your boat isn't too close to the source it'll hopefully be nothing more than smoke damage. The fire department will be extra motivated too, as their shiny, fairly new fire boat is spending the winter in the same building.
