Re: Double Mast Demasting @Sea

Is this the boat Sailing Mereweather ended up with? Same model of boat with busted masts strapped to the deck.

Re: Double Mast Demasting @Sea

I thought it was odd they didn't discuss or speculate on the cause of the mast failure. My guess is that they had running rigging that looked fine on inspection but failed. Replacing running rigging, chain plates, etc. is a hassle and expensive. Crevice corrosion is real. I feel bad for them. I have enjoyed their channel over the years and hope they can overcome it.

You mean standing rigging.

On a ketch, the triatic stay [if fitted] runs between the main mast, and the head of the mizzen mast, and is used to stop the upper section of the mizzen mast being pulled backwards.

Not all ketches have triatic stays.
The same job can be done by forward mizzen shrouds, but the triatic stay removes the need for forward stays.
As wholybee & pcmm note, a mizzen is NOT a ‘back-up’ mast.

The triatic stay connecting the main to the mizzen mast is very common (you'll see one on a ketch more often than not), often it goes unnoticed by those not familiar with ketch rigs.

Indeed.
Deck not cluttered/obstructed with forward mizzen shrouds ... look up to triatic.

Re: Double Mast Demasting @Sea

My first boat was a ketch. It too had the triatic stay, but after a short period of time, I removed it, wishing to eliminate the possibility of the main mast bringing down the mizzen.
I always had it in my mind.....in the eventuality that the main came down, I could relocate the mizzen, which was light enough to manhandle. I never had to test this theory though.
The main mast was quite heavy, requiring several people to lift, but the mizzen was a lightweight.

Not a single one I have sailed anyways. Can you name some common ketch models having triatic stay. Googled pictures and found one Nauticat model having it.

Of the ketches that have been at our home marina recently, the boats and rigging style is as follows:

Reliance 44: has a triatic stay
Vagabond 42: no triatic stay
Cal 3-46: no triatic stay

No wonder not seen much here, most are US boats, or mostly for the US markets.
