I studied Valiant 42 Bowsprits. I talked to Scott. I talked to Robert Perry. I Studied Scott & Kitty's Bowsprit. I drew what I wanted on graph paper. I purchased a 20' section of 2", (as I recall), schedule 40 316L SS pipe. I knew that I had 20' of pipe to work with. Consulting with Dan of PT Rigging and Carol of PT Sails, and Scott and Robert, I decided on a 3' bowsprit with the head stay out about 2'. The extra foot was for a stand-up block and an asymmetrical spinnaker, as well as the 33kg Rocna Anchor. I then bought a piece of doorskin and made it into a large piece of graph paper to scale with my drawing. Then I drew it out in lifesize. I cut it so I could fit it over the bow. I then called Seattle Boiler Works, (I am a Steam Engineer), and they set up a jig to bend it. The big beefy welds were. Mig welded. The Gussets, where I didn't want a large fillet were Tig welded. The Bobstay/Headstay tang is a single piece of 5/8" 316L SS, (I believe), 316L SS that penetrates the bowsprit. The Bobstay Tang is, (as best as I can recall), 1/2" 316L SS on each side, and the padeye itself is 3/4" 316L SS. The bowsprit "cheeks" were repeatedly welded and ground until they took the shape of the hull at the bow. The are a perfect fit. The bobstay tang was lifted above waterline due to a solid fiberglass/resin collision space at waterline of the Valiant 40'. Due to this it took extreme care to design it so that the angle of the headstay/bobstay would be obtuse for strength. Then an anchor roller was machined out of Delrin specifically for the Rocna. I cut teak decks to set on the gussets. You guys know: it is all in the details. I could go on even more, but, even I'm falling asleep I can be more precise with the measurements when I get to the boat, or find my drawings. The most important measurement, the Location of the headstay, is ~24" from the original stem fitting.
Aloha, Greg

Why are your selling?
You have a really nice boat too!

It has become apparent that my wife's cruising intentions have passed. We just bought a home/mini-farm, and have grandkids nearby.

I LOVE TO SAIL, but, honestly, I love daysailing on a dinghy, cat, tri, what-ever. I also spent 35 years as a merchant marine engineer, and no longer have the traveling bug many of my vintage do. We live 4 hours from the boat and frankly, she does deserve to be sailed to far-away lands. If it does not sell, I will continue to work on her and sail her in the PNW, and possibly far beyond.

The rig is only a part of the blood, sweat, and tears that I've put into VOILA!

I live where I can downhill ski in 10 minutes. I also hike right outside my door daily, and ride my AT bike regularly. I've got too many pans in the fire?

Thanks for your interest Telemark,
Aloha, Greg
