For Sale Damaged 1975 Gulfstar M53

1975 Gulfstar M53 Motor Sailer for Sale - A great chance for a DIY’er to get into a great boat if you have the skills to repair her. $25K cash. Clear title, federally documented. One of a kind vessel!

This is Vince Lazarra’s last hull number of this series (#27). The vessel was fully restored as a commercial luxury charter yacht in 2020 including mast refurbishment with new standing and running rigging, complete interior refurb, new paint job (entire vessel), sails restitched, addition of full commercial galley and a custom pilot house.

She was involved in a collision and we have decided to close our business and sell her as is. She floats, functions and makes way under power with no issues.

The vessel is damaged (port-side amidship) and can be repaired as a beautiful live aboard - but no longer as a commercial charter. The vessel is fully functional with all hull systems operating as they should. She will require repair of main mast standing rigging (broken spreaders) but all rigging wire masts and steps are undamaged. She has a 360 HP John Deere Turbo Diesel (well cared for and running strong) powering a Twin Disc Transmission with a single screw; 16KW Phasor 2 Diesel Generator 110/220 (Also running strong); all navigation, communication and safety gear are present and functioning and she will make way under power with no propulsion, navigation or communication issues. The vessel has a large windlass with twin anchors on chain, a 24V bow thruster, a custom swim platform, she is wired for a dive compressor and a second generator on deck, she has a large solar system, auto fire extinguishing system, VHF, AIS, Radar, SSB, and is wired for wind generation up the mizzen mast (with mounts attached).

Please message me for list of equipment, spares, gear and systems (too many to list here).

Damage: significant impact to port side amidship that requires main mast chain plate repair, hullside fiberglass and structural repair, interior cabinetry and interior built in repair. The vessel has been “patched” to protect from the elements - we motored her 120 miles to the boat yard in the open Gulf (Ft Meyers to St Pete). There is a 4” crack below waterline that does not leak. This vessel will be sold as is. Clear title is on hand. Vessel is USCG Documented.

The vessel is currently on the hard and can be seen by appointment in St Petersburg FL. If we receive no reasonable offers by 1 October 2023, she will dismantled and sold for parts.

Re: For Sale Damaged 1975 Gulfstar M53

That’s a very tempting opportunity and I’d be a contender if I lived in the US. Yes it’s a lot of work but I’ve seen worse, even the beautiful sailing superyacht “Eleonora” is going to be repaired after being rammed and sunk while alongside the wharf then left on the bottom for a month. I saw a Beneteau 50 that was Tboned by a fishing boat’ the wedge shaped intrusion extended from the waterline to the gunwhale and across the deck to the cabin side. She didn’t have the mast damage that your vessel sustained but the chainplates were rebuilt.

I agree with skipperpete: if you have a place to put it while you work on it, and can keep water out of it while you do so, you could have a nice boat at the end of it.

Maybe the OP could tell what was done to bring the boat to charterable standards in his area?

Might be tempted, but suspect not insurable as-is to new buyer. So likely couldn’t secure a boat yard to do repairs. So agree with previous post would need a private venue to do repairs..

Unless you are aware of an 11th hour reprieve, she was sent for scrapping earlier this year....

The Gulfstar though would be a great repairer for someone with the right skills, they will end up with a lovely cruiser....

Re: For Sale Damaged 1975 Gulfstar M53

Only the spreaders and port side chain plates were damaged (regarding standing rigging) from a midship whiplash like impact by a power vessel. The port bulkhead that the midship chain plates attach to took the brunt of the impact. No water intrusion or leaking in the slip. She is patched and now hauled and in a working yard. She can be re-splashed and moved under her own power in open water at speed (8 knots). To answer Anne’s query…The vessel was restored in 2020, re-surveyed and insured by a commercial insurer…then licensed for OUPV charter service.

There is a lot of labor there I expect and nowhere near as much cash as labor. So for the right DIY might be fantastic. Best wishes to the owners present and future

Re: For Sale Damaged 1975 Gulfstar M53

Hey thanks for that link IslandHopper, I was unaware of that recent news. I was surprised that a rebuild was being planned given the total loss of the interior but figured the hull repair and a sandblast would be not too difficult for a Dutch shipyard..... the interior is a next level complication with tremendous costs attached.

Having repaired dozens of boats damaged by Hurricane Irma in sxm, I see this one and I don't see it as bad, I'm not going to tell you that it's easy or cheap, but that it can be left as good as new, what does piss me off is the FWD chainplate, which is normally close to the main bulkhead, if the bulkheads are intact it's an FG project, for me it's a good deal, I tell you that I have seen much worse things to be better than new afterward.

I think this is a good deal too. OP: don’t forget - interiors sell boats.

Put those charter pics up. Also list on the other sites where people don’t already own boats. Sailboatlistings.com, etc.

This would be a great deal for someone short on cash who has time

Sounds like it could be a good deal for the right person! But sheesh... 360 HP in a 53 foot sailboat? Even for a so-called "motor sailor", that seems really extreme. Am I missing something here?

Jim

Someone at my marina shoehorned a 180 HP diesel into a Hartley Tahitian.

I am no longer surprised by anything.

It’s a really nice motor and generator package!

Engine: John Deere Power Tech Diesel 6.8 liter

Generator: Phaser Model K4 16KW Kubota 4cyl diesel

Both are well maintained and running strong.

That wasn’t a 3208 Caterpillar by any chance? I did some work on one in a Hartley Ferrocement yacht some years ago.

Attaching some interior photos…may take a few days to get them all uploaded.
