NEW YORK CITY BY BOAT

Dear All, I'll be visiting NYC on my 45' sailboat, 6 foot draft, with our family of 4 in august. We'd like to moor and/or tie up at a marina near downtown Manhattan for 3 to 5 days.

Any suggestions/recommendations from your experiences please?

79th St Boat Basin on the Hudson River in Manhatten has moorings for a reasonable price. You need a good dinghy and outboard to buck the sometimes 3 kt current to get to the dock.

The location can't be beat. You are a couple of blocks from a subway stop.

Marinas on the Jersey side are expensive. One night at a marina will pay for 4 nights at the mooring.

79th St Boat basin moorings are for 40 foot boats and less. But you can tie up at the docks there. its about $2.50 per foot.
theres two other marinas, one North Cove Yacht Harbour near battery park thats $7 per foot per day, and a marina half way between the two at $5.50 per day.

I never saw the current at 79th Street at 3 knots but it certainly gets close to 2 knots. There is good anchoring either side of 79th street (see Active captain) but they charge you $26 per day to use the dinghy dock, but you get to use the shower and free laundry.

Dont yell at the squirrels! I know them all and love each and every one of them. And if you chase any of my baby (or mom and daddy) racoons I'll be on your case too ... oh and that goes for the ducklings as well

North Cove marina is a mega yacht location and full of rolling from the rove traffic.
On the Jersey side, Liberty Landing has very clam conditions, full service, and an easy ferry ride to the city.

79th street boat basin will drive you crazy from noise - all the kids with rice rockets race up and down the west side highway all night long. It also gets rather choppy. On stopovers, I prefer to anchor just north of the GWB - pretty, and quiet.

Down south, there is another city-run mooring field right at the ventilator stacks for the holland tunnel I've tucked into - also noisy - tied up there the 10th anniversary of 9/11, trucks banging in the tunnel made me think new explosions were happening.

Liberty landing is your only shot for peace & quiet.

Pj :79th st boat basin (city run) is worth a shot ,lots things nearby and good neighborhoods etc..will need a decent dingy for your group due to currents . Also recommend at least 1 nite N. of GW bridge under the Palisades(cliffs ,parklands and hiking trails and near wilderness while in full view of NYC!

If fact anywhere on the West side of the Hudson will offer good holding in waters too shallow for the commercial craft and more removed from the clang and bang of the Big Apple.
