Florida Keys Anchorages

We will be sailing from Key Largo to Key West at the end of December. Anyone have some good anchorages along that route that we shouldn't miss?

Re: Florida Keys Anchorages

One of my favorites from our last trip was off the Big Spanish Channel by Big Pine Key, where the only light visible was from "Fat Albert" (a military radar blimp tethered off of Cudjoe Key) and there were no other boats anchored. The stars and the luminescent water creatures created one of those amazing nights. Good protection, but no where to go ashore.

The Waterway Guide and Skipper Bob has a good list (also the online Waterway Planner).
Have a great trip!

Re: Florida Keys Anchorages

Close to your starting point, but if the wind allows, I like anchoring off Snappers

Boot Key Harbor, Marathon

If calm, I also like Bahia Honda just inside the bridge

+1 on Big Spanish

Not an anchorage, but I like to pull in Safe Harbor on Stock Island, and spend the night at the Hogfish Bar and Grill

In KW, I like to anchor up just north of the shoal north of Whisteria Island, west of the harbor channel

Claiborne Young's Cruisersnet.net has anchoring information and lots of other good stuff.

Do you have the coordinates for the above location? It sounds great!

Re: Florida Keys Anchorages

We spent two nights in Bahia Honda - around Christmas.
The place is really great, the park quite nice, beaches are of white sand. They accept pets.
We have a 52' sailboat and had no problem at all. The bottom is sand with patches of weeds, and holds very well - we had up to 25kn SE wind.
We anchored half way between the two bridges, as close as reasonable to the beach markers, with 90' of chain.
The current is highly overrated: it is MUCH less than in Miami government cut, just noticeable.
The bay is not protected from the ocean waves which can make for a pretty bumpy night - quite unconformable at times: I slept very well - thank you, my wife didn't.
