Re: New england

It's often the best weather of the year from about southern Maine to southern New England, but it is also the time of the year when you have to keep one eye on hurricanes that may be coming up fast from the south. It does start to cool off, especially during the evenings. Many touristy harbors are quiet after Labor Day.

Re: New england

I'm in Southern New England.

The weather around here is unpredictable in any season.

Last week it was in the 50's and raining. But won't get above freezing all of this week, and snow is expected tomorrow.

For boating, September can be very nice. A little cooler than July and August, more 60's and 70's than 80's. Less fog. Some 50's at night. A little breezier than mid summer.

These are just generalizations. Last summer it rained at least one day every weekend for 7 or 8 straight weeks in September and October. And while we don't get many direct hurricane hits, we do get "remnants" pretty frequently.

Actually, it is usually pretty nice overall that time of year, you just can't count on getting a nice warm week (if you are thinking of chartering).

Re: New england

Most cruising boats start hauling out by Columbus Day (2nd week of October). September starts out nice, and gets cool by the end in New England. By the 2nd half of September, expect temps in the mid 50's at night. We usually have the heat on the boat at night by mid to late sept in southern CT and RI.

Re: New england

It is by far the best cruising time. Water has warmed so no to less fog. More fog as you go further north in the Canadian maritimes. Air temps are good. Fewer crowds. Cold fronts aren't coming through too frequently. However it is the beginning of when hurricanes or tropical storms make their way north.
