Long Island, NY - North Shore Hurricane Irene Reports ?
Anyone have any reports from Long Island's North Shore harbors? Looking at buoy data looks like the winds have topped at around 55 MPH. How are the harbors looking? Many boats ashore? Storm surge? Etc... Hoping for the best.

I'm anchored in Oyster Bay. It passed west of me, near NYC, and it felt like we caught part of the eye here. The wind's have shifted to the south and abated a bit. Don't have an anemometer, it's probably around 40 now, and slowly easing. I expect it to continue shifting.
Btw, the marina boats are already out in the bay checking on boats.

Well that sounds like good news. Came across this video of Port Washington a little west of you.

Looks like the water came up a bit but, not too bad. Though if the winds have shifted to the south that helps LI but, could hurt Connecticut. Thanks for the report.

In Stratford, Ct- Housatonic boat club- all boats made it thru. Tons of preparation by its members. Winds in town 30-40 now- Worse is over.

Speaking of the Housatonic over in Connecticut.

Looks like it was a pretty close call from looking at the boats in this video. Glad to hear things are on the downside.

It's calmed down a lot -- probably 15-20 SSW. It's just after high tide and it looks like the storm surge here was around 5', but didn't seem to flood anything here -- I'm just outside the cove.

I usually anchor nearby on some of my cruises just off of Coopers Bluff in Cold Spring Harbor. Just curious what anchor(s) did you set out to ride out Irene in your location?

Little more serious flooding in Port Jefferson:
Hurricane Irene Port Jeff 2011 - YouTube
Though I think this may be more because of the amount of rain that fell rather than storm surge from the sound. But. I could be wrong on that.

Nice sunset views along it too. Wish they would have showed a shot of the boats in the harbor. Though at least there were not any boats blocking the road either.

I anchored in 8' and put out a 35 pound CQR on 150' of 5/16 chain, and a 35 pound danforth on about 150' of 1/2" nylon. As it turned out, I could have gotten by on either one by themselves, but it's nice to have both.

Yep, always nice to have backups especially in situations like Irene. Glad worked out for you.
