Wiring assist please

So far so good, I haven't blown up the boat nor electrocuted myself.

Can someone eyeball this sophisticated high tech wiring diagram and tell me if I have the planned wiring correct?

The key ignition (I think) turns once to connect BATT to IGN, and a second turn (which is a spring back switch) would normally go to the Starter, but I have opted to use this for the fuel pre-heat.

To start engine
A - I
G - C
D - Starter Relay

To Pre-heat Diesel Fuel
H - E
F- Earth

Alternator light
G - J
K - L

Alternator
M - BATTERY (+)
N - unused

HI Kokonut,
Not that I can validate your situation 100% but the lack of wires on your schematic messes with my brain. I would have to 'google on the interwebs' how to do the alt indicator light since I have not wired one for 20+ years. Which alternator?

Re: Wiring assist please

Yes the wiring is correct IMO. The alternator is wired as I would expect it to be assuming you don't have any other terminals on the alternator.

You should have some circuit protection (fuse or circuit breaker) between A & I and located near A but not between A & M. The wire from M often gets back to A via the starter motor +ve wiring.

The next thing is to determine the wire gauge!!!!

Re: Wiring assist please

Do our kinds of engine have the option of pre-heating diesel fuel? I know you need to keep bunker fuel warm to stop it from solidifying but that is something else. Also why only for a few seconds prior to starting? Just interested. Unless you mean to say glow plugs or maybe inlet manifold heating coil in which case I think I understand.

Re: Wiring assist please

Thank you everyone for your responses.

@Spot - The diagram you drew matched what I had, with the only minor addition of D leading to the Starter relay (which is wired to the Starter Solenoid, which is wired to the Starter Motor). The alternator is a Lucas LXA119

@Wotname - hahaha ,,, I had to look up 'IMO'. And yes, there is a fuse between A and I. The wires from the battery are Guage 0 which the Salesman convinced me was the way to go (I found out later that, this approach was likely an overkill), otherwise most of the wiring to the Switch panel or instruments are primarily 15A to 20A rated.

@HeinSdL - Sorry, yes ... my reference to the fuel pre-heat is indeed the glow plugs.

Thank you again for your input, it has placed my mind at ease with this aspect of the project.

Understood, no worries. Here are the mark-ups from everyone so far:

Re: Wiring assist please

Would the glow plugs need to run off of a relay rather than the 'crank' protion of the ignition switch?

I have never had a marine diesel. I have had an old diesel farm tractor that used a heavy manual switch and a car and truck that were relayed off the ignition with a timer function to only run for 10 seconds or something like that.
