Re: What crimper do you guys use for larger cables?

[QUOTE=Jerry Woodward;2678066]I see it on Amazon for $150.00, I think I'll order one."
This is non-ratcheting version. The one MS had was the rachiting set. I have the non-ratcheting (i'm cheap) and it works well.

I wish I had bouight the bench mount fore over 1/0 cable.
Get the Ftz lugs.

MS recommends non-ratcheting, for greater ease getting into tight spaces.

I got the non ratcheting model. Be here tomorrow.

On another note John, from your nickname it appears you are in Connecticut. Is that a safe assumption?

Might be getting a boat surveyed in Westbrook and thought it would be fun if you came along at the end and tell me the real truth about the electrical set up! [emoji5]

The FTZ 94284 makes diamond-shape, but not hex. I don't get ears on the larger sizes, but sometimes little ones on the smaller cables, like #6. Just turn 90 degrees and smash them down. I believe the FTZ makes a UL approved crimp, at least with the ratcheting one. I cut one open, and it's solid.

I have seen problems with the hammer crimps, be careful with them. They tend not to pinch all of the strands, and then if the lug works around a bit on the cable, they all end up loose. Even if it doesn't pull out, the heat can cause damage.

Are the holes in the lugs for batt cables 5/16" or 3/8" ?

Re: What crimper do you guys use for larger cables?

Use the tighter one that fits the bolt / stud for **your** battery.

Too large a hole means very little contact area with the base, increases resistance makes for very poor connection.

Generally, but not always, 5/16" posts. Positive and negative not always the same. As stated above, use a terminal that fits closely to post.
