Trojan TE105 vs TE35

Looks like we might be up for new batteries.

We Dont have a sealed compartment, so the popular Trojan TE105s I presume is out (they arent sealed are they?)

What are the TE35 gel batteries like - I couldn't determine if they have the same reputation, or does Trojan only excel in the Wet Lead Acid range?

I've no experience with Trojan AGMs or Gels, and did not even know they made Gel batteries.

Look into agm batteries. Lifeline is tops in reputation, firefly oasis is expensive, but impressive psoc performance. Both discussed in detail here on the forum.

Yes AGM does seem cheaper - is that at the expense of cycles (life?).

Anyone got any experience with Fullriver AGM's? (Those other brands are nice as you say too)

I went with AGM's because I didn't want to worry about water levels and other lead acid maintenance issues. However, I'm a perfect candidate for AGM's because my boat sits in a slip on shore power every time I come back from sailing. So they stay charged up all the time, which is important for their health. That said, I have a set of LifeLine's that are stickly house batteries I bought before the 2013 season. They're going great, stay on the boat all winter and are ready to go in Spring.

Have I been missing something all these years? What's the issue with non-sealed batteries and lack of enclosed compartment? What kind of enclosure would this be? Maybe it's hydrogen evolution. I have begun to wonder about my CO alarms.

I have 4 Fall River 6 volt batteries for over five years with no problems yielding apx 200 amps at 12 volts. They are losing some power so may be time to buy them again. I would recommend them.

Thats really interesting since the local guy wants to sell me 4 Fullriver 6v batteries, so probably the same (except 5 years worth of improvements).

They a bit cheaper compared to the Trojan gels, but not the absolute cheapest on the market - somewhere in the middle. Good to hear that the brand is "OK" 5 years is maybe a bit on the short side - 7 years would be better.

Many people don't, but you batteries should be in a vented compartment, as they give of hydrogen sulfide, maybe hydrogen and other nasties. Mainly when charging I believe.

ABYC standards call for it - many don't.

The box I think is to protect from spilled liquid.

They need to be strapped down in the event of a roll, not to stop the acid coming out - but the batteries flying all over the show.
